Adult caregivers can get a break

SANDUSKY — About 25% of Erie County residents are 65 or older, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates. And the local population is continuing to age, according to Nicole Ziegler, chief health services officer for the Erie County Health Department. It's why those with the county health department believe that Compass Point, its adult day center, will become more relevant than ever. Compass Point Senior Enrichment Center, located at 795 Bardshar Road in Sandusky, provides "comfort care for you and the one you are caring for," said Pete Schade, Erie County's health commissioner. What it offers Primarily serving seniors with dementia, including Alzheimer's patients, Compass Point is open four days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, providing a hot meal and activities for its customers and a respite for local caregivers. Compass Point provides socialization for its clients and stimulates them physically and mentally, Ziegler said. There are activities, lunch and snacks. If the client needs help getting to the bathroom or needs a shower, that can be provided, too, she said. It also provides a break for caregivers, Ziegler said. Compass Point director Mackenzie McCoy said that, on a typical day, the customers drink coffee and watch the news and a game show while the staff waits for everyone to come in. Then there's an exercise program, such as chair yoga or drumming, and a hot lunch at about 11:30 a.m. Afternoons feature a game, such as a crossword or trivia contest, or an arts and crafts activity. Before coming to Compass Point, McCoy worked at Commons of Providence, serving as activity director for independent living, memory care and assisted living. "I always had a passion for those with dementia," McCoy said. "For a long time, it was an underserved population. There's a huge need for that now." Transportation to Compass Point can be provided for about a 30-mile radius. In fact, the health department just bought a new vehicle equipped with a wheelchair lift. How to get involved The cost for Compass Point is $81 a day and $2 per mile for customers who are transported there instead of dropped off. But Compass Point accepts Medicare, Medicaid and most forms of private insurance, and there is also grant money to help cover costs. The health department can assist new customers looking for ways to minimize out-of-pocket costs. In addition, Ottawa County Senior Services has a voucher program to help Ottawa County residents afford to use Compass Point. People interested in using Compass Point may call 419-502-1020. The process typically includes a tour of the facility, a needs assessment, working with the customer to help with payment and scheduling a first day for service. Officials hope that Compass Point's customer base will grow. The current census tends to run 10 to 15 people a day, but the health department would like to raise that to 30 to 35 a day.
