Danbury firefighter faces felony

DANBURY TWP. — A Danbury Township firefighter is facing a felony intimidation charge. Cody J. Dunn, 30, of the 200 block of S. Sunnydale Drive, is facing one third-degree felony charge of intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case or delinquent child action proceeding. At about 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 27, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office was alerted to a possible sex offense involving a 12-year-old girl, according to a memo obtained by the Register. Danbury police Officer Nick Davenport contacted the sheriff's office after the initial complaint was made to his department. Davenport requested that the sheriff's office take over the investigation, according to Ottawa County prosecutor James VanEerten. A criminal complaint filed against Dunn states, "Cody Dunn knowingly sent text messages to Jerry Dunn for him to read to (the victim) stating that she needed to change her story or she would get in trouble and video recorded it and sent back to Cody Dunn." Jerry Dunn, 55, of the 5200 block of E. Wohlers Ave., Marblehead, also faces a single count of felony intimidation, according to Ottawa County jail records. He is Cody's father. The Register requested the report from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office but was only provided with the memo and the complaint. The memo is considered the initial incident report, VanEerten said, due to the alleged perpetrator not being charged with a sex crime at the time of the report request. VanEerten said he expects the investigation to be quite lengthy, as investigators will have many avenues that need to be looked into. When the Danbury Township Fire Department was alerted to the investigation and charge against Cody Dunn, he was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to VanEerten. Cody Dunn and Jerry Dunn are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. arraignments on Wednesday in Ottawa County Municipal Court. They appeared on Monday and had their bonds set at $40,000 each. The Dunns were ordered to wear GPS devices if released on bond and not have any contact with each other or the alleged victim. As of early Tuesday, neither Jerry nor Cody is listed in the Ottawa County Detention Facility roster.
