Jones pours in 35 to lead Sandusky past Norwalk

SANDUSKY — Camrion Jones was feeling it. The 5-foot-10 junior guard scored a career-high 35 points Thursday to lead Sandusky to a 79-49 Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division win against Norwalk at the Big House. "In the gym, I'm working every day in practice and it translated to the game," Jones said. "It's exciting to get that many points. I just hope I can do it again and help our team win." Jones finished 14 for 24 from the field and was 7 for 11 from 3-point range. He scored 16 points in a dominant second quarter to help the Blue Streaks build a 49-26 halftime lead. Jones could've finished with 37 points, but he missed a dunk in the final minute of the game. "It seemed like every one he shot went in," Sandusky coach DeMar Moore said. "When he's shooting like that we're a pretty good team." Sandusky pushed its record to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the SBC Lake. Jones' 3-pointer with 2:54 left in the third quarter gave the Streaks a 68-31 lead and triggered a running clock for the rest of the game. Sandusky endured a sluggish start and led just 5-3 midway through the first quarter when the Streaks increased their defensive intensity and went on a 12-0 run in the next two minutes. Jones finished the run with a steal and layup to give Sandusky a 17-3 lead. The run coincided with the appearance of usual starter Ahmaj Woolfork, a high-energy junior who came off the bench on Senior Night. Woolfork scored eight of his 16 points in the first quarter and helped force 10 Truckers turnovers in the opening eight minutes. "When Ahmaj came into the game, he gave us a spark," Moore said. "His energy created a tempo for us and we were able to play faster and get up and down more. He got a few steals and was able to finish around the basket." Sandusky had six steals that led directly to layups in the first half. The easy buckets helped the Streaks shoot 53 percent for the game, which was the first outing in the second half of the Lake Division season. Dale Johnson added nine points — eight in the first quarter — and helped Sandusky enjoy a 21-9 rebounding advantage in the first half. Late in the first quarter, Johnson stole a pass and passed to Anthony Redding for a dunk that put the Streaks up 23-5. "I think we're starting to get a good feel for each other," Moore said. "Guys are starting to come together. Every game we try to grow a little more and we want to be playing our best basketball in late February and early March." Norwalk, which dropped to 0-14 overall and 0-6 in the Lake, had a couple of positive moments. The Truckers scored 21 points in the second quarter — their second-highest total in a period this season. "We do a better job attacking at times; I think we're making strides," Norwalk coach Adam Kreischer said. "But until we get stronger and more athletic we're gonna struggle against a lot of teams and especially against a team like Sandusky. You look at athlete for athlete on the floor and it just doesn't look the same." Norwalk calmed down after the first quarter and committed only seven turnovers in the final three quarters. "We challenged our guys at halftime to hold them to less offensive rebounds and box out and have less than five turnovers in the second half," Kreishcer said. "Obviously their pressure wasn't quite the same as they put on in the first quarter, but we're more capable of handling that than what we showed. "We're at the point in the year where lack of experience can't be an excuse all the time." Nolan Jones led Norwalk with 16 points — 10 in the fourth quarter. Kian Kreischer added 12 points on four 3-pointers and Xavier Saunders also was in double figures with 11 points. The Truckers are off this weekend before visiting Edison on Tuesday. Coach Kreischer challenged his team to keep competing. "While we've had some scores that have been pretty lopsided, I would think that anybody who was in the gym for those games would say we didn't quit," he said. "We have a bunch of guys who continue to play hard because they know that wins will be hard to come by this year. Hopefully we continue to get better and it shows in future years." Sandusky swept the season series from Norwalk by a combined score of 137-78. "Tonight, we did a good job of executing our defensive game plan and we use our defense to create our offense, which is a staple for us," Moore said. The Blue Streaks, who have won four of their last five, are scheduled to host Mansfield Senior at 2 p.m. Saturday. "I hope we get to play them," Moore said. "That's another good game for us. I hope we get it in. If not, I'm sure we can make it up."
