Contract awarded for Monroe St. project

SANDUSKY — They're going full throttle to fix a busy but bumpy street. During a recent public meeting, Sandusky city commissioners approved a $1.1 million construction contract to upgrade West Monroe Street. Norwalk-based Buckeye Excavating & Construction submitted the winning bid. Work primarily calls for improving infrastructure, both the road and storm sewer, from Camp to Decatur streets. All work should end by Dec. 1. "This work builds on the improvements we've made on other sections of Monroe Street over the past few years," said Josh Snyder, the city's interim public works director. "It addresses long-standing drainage issues and completes the last stretch of roadway along this busy corridor that still needed to be paved." Snyder said the project will add more than 1,700 feet of new storm sewer to help reduce localized flooding. "Adding a separate sewer supports ongoing efforts to reduce clean water being routed and, ultimately, treated at the wastewater treatment plant while also improving system capacity and reducing long-term maintenance needs," according to a city memo, noting, "The roadway will also be resurfaced." Fully making over Monroe Street This upcoming project continues infrastructure improvements to overhaul West Monroe Street in recent years: • Similar work was completed in 2025 between Broadway and Camp streets. • Additional sections were repaved in 2023 between Meigs and Decatur and in 2025 between Camp Street and Edgewater Drive. "Once this project is complete, it will mark the final segment of Monroe Street scheduled for resurfacing," the city statement read.
