Good luck, Vargo and Peugeot

We on the editorial board want to congratulate and wish the best of luck to Sandusky's new city commission president Kate Vargo (this position is also known as ex officio mayor) as well as to newly selected commission vice president/vice mayor Gregg Peugeot. Vargo's title doesn't come with any special voting powers, but represents the leader of the city's governing body and, in general, the de facto leader of the city. She could also take command of police and emergency operations in the event of a city emergency where lives are in danger. We appreciate the fact that this leadership position is being held by a woman for only the second time in the city's history and the first time in four decades. The first was Martha Flippen, who was mayor from 1986-87. When we spoke to her, Vargo cited some of her biggest goals for the next two years — representing the remainder of her current term, though she could seek re-election afterward — which included the desire to complete two major city projects: completing redevelopment of Battery Park and construction of a new city recreation center. Both projects are long in the making, and we would also like to see progress and eventual completion of the multi-million dollar initiatives. Again, best of luck to Vargo and Peugeot and we hope their leadership continues to drive Sandusky along the correct course. Editorial board
