Winter weather wrecks basketball slate

All nine basketball games and one swimming meet that were scheduled for Thursday were postponed due to winter weather conditions. Only one — Edison at Willard girls — was pushed back to Friday. Edison also had a game postponed Wednesday, a trip to Lakota in Sandusky County. Other postponed girls games were Bellevue at Clyde, Fremont St. Joseph at St. Mary Central Catholic, Gibsonburg at Danbury, Huron at Sandusky, Norwalk at Mansfield Madison and Port Clinton at Vermilion. The entire Firelands Conference boys slate was wiped out, including Ashland Crestview at St. Paul and Monroeville at South Central. The Route 20 rivalry clash between Division IV No. 1 Bellevue and Clyde was rescheduled for Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, with junior varsity tipping at 11 a.m. Port Clinton-Vermilion was rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 21. Vermilion is looking for a junior varsity contest to play before the varsity contest against the Redskins. Norwalk will make the trip to Mansfield to take on Madison on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Huron-Sandusky, Gibsonburg-Danbury and SJCC-SMCC are all working on rescheduled dates. The Monroeville-South Central boys game is also working on a new date while Crestview-St. Paul will play Thursday, Feb. 12. That night, JV boys will start action at 4:30, followed by varsity girls and then varsity boys. Margaretta's home swim meet against Vermilion that was scheduled for Thursday has been postponed to Tuesday, Feb. 3. Full slate on deck Friday Despite more snow in the forecast for Friday, it's nearly a full slate for local teams. The Bellevue boys team will travel to Sandusky in a massive Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division contest for both teams. Each enter with 3-1 league records, one game back of undefeated Perkins. Whoever comes up short at The Big House could be eliminated from league title aspirations. The Division IV No. 4 Pirates will hit the road to take on winless Norwalk on Friday. After the weekend off, Perkins will take on Division III Oregon Clay. The Eagles enter Friday's game at Sylvania Northview with a record of 10-1. The other SBC Lake contest pits Clyde hosting Tiffin Columbian. The Fliers enter the game after scoring a school-record 107 points in a road win over Toledo Scott on Tuesday. The lone SBC Bay Division game has Division V No. 4 Margaretta hosting Port Clinton. The Polar Bears won the first matchup between the two, 68-44, on Dec. 11. Division VII No. 3 SMCC travels to Woodmore looking to keep its undefeated record unblemished. The Panthers are 9-0, the best start since the 1979-1980 state championship team finished 28-0. In other SBC River Division action, Danbury travels to Northwood. After opening the season with eight straight losses, the Lakers are 2-2 over their last four games. In addition to the Edison at Willard girls game, the Firelands Conference takes center stage. Monroeville is scheduled to host Ashland Crestview in a day-time school game. Junior varsity will tip at 12:30 p.m. and play two quarters before varsity follows. Elsewhere, Plymouth hosts Mapleton, St. Paul welcomes in South Central in varsity-only action and New London hosts Western Reserve.
