Frantic pace helped Clyde score 107 points

TOLEDO — The first half felt pretty normal. Clyde had 45 points in the first 16 minutes Tuesday on the road against Toledo Scott. But, the second half was kicked up a notch. The Fliers scored 28 points and 34 more points in the fourth quarter, topping the Bulldogs 107-76 in non-league action. The 107 points set a school record for points in a game. Clyde scored 3.34 points a minute, which would equate to 134 points in a college basketball game or 160 points in a NBA game. The previous school record was 99 points Dec. 14, 1990 in a game against St. Mary Central Catholic. "The guys knew the record was 99 points," Clyde coach Jared Shetzer said. "We hit that and I turned around to the bench and told them congrats. We get to the free throw line and Karcen Garner hits the free throw to put us at 100. They were all really excited. "At Scott, you only have about 10 minutes to clear the gym after the game, so it was a short celebration. We talked more about it at practice (Wednesday)." Freshman JeCori Roberts hit six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 34 points for the Fliers (6-5). Garner added 17 points, Oscar Webb had 13 points and Chase Castle added 10 points. "We had consistent scoring the entire night," Shetzer said. "JeCori had 34 points, but it was a quiet 34 because everyone else was scoring. We shared the ball well in the first half. In the second half, the floodgates opened. It was 3-pointer after 3-pointer. "I looked up with six minutes to go and we had 83 points. I thought maybe we'd get to 90, but then Karcen Garner and Max Swander hit a couple 3s. It happened fast." The 100 point mark is rare for teams in the area. Sandusky was the only local team to do it in the last decade. The Blue Streaks scored 102 in a win over Willard on Dec. 26, 2022 at Quicken Loans Arena. Perkins hasn't done it since Dec. 19, 1998 in a win at Firelands while Margaretta hasn't hit the mark since dropping 113 against Lakota on Dec. 9, 2014. Bellevue scored 109 on Dec. 22, 2009 and Columbian hit 100 on Jan. 13, 2006, both against Upper Sandusky. St. Mary Central Catholic put up 102 on Nov. 27, 2015 versus Monroeville. Norwalk has only hit a century once in program history, scoring that against Edison on March 6, 1971. Monroeville did it twice in a two-week span in 2008. "When I was at Bay, we scored 100 points a number of times," Shetzer said. "It's a really cool game. I think the highest scoring game I ever had was 105, so it was a record for myself as well. It was an awesome thing to see the scoreboard hit triple digits. You're not sure if every scoreboard goes that. "We have a drill to score 200 points in four minutes in practice. It's obviously no defense, but our scoreboard doesn't go that high. It goes to 199. It's something cool we do at practice." Shetzer said Scott (1-9) scoring 76 points wasn't a huge concern. Through 11 games, Clyde is averaging 69.8 points per game while giving up 63.4 points a night. "It was just kind of the way the game was going," Shetzer said. "They had a guy fill it up and score 30 points. Defensively, we had a game plan to press and get the game going up and down. We knew if we scored, they were going to score. "I don't get too caught up in it. At the end of the day, it's still a big margin of victory in a win. That's just the way the style of the game was. We score a lot and give it up a lot." The Fliers start the second half of their regular season by hosting Columbian (4-8) on Friday and Fostoria (1-8) on Saturday. It's the beginning of a stretch where Clyde plays four straight home games and six of seven games at home. "I think we have a few games we let get away there," Shetzer said. "There are some growing pains and a lot of learning. It's a process. We'll get ready for the push into February and hopefully March. We want to be playing our best basketball at the end of the season. "The kids are great. They have big aspirations."
