Student nominated to Air Force Academy

HURON — A local student earned recognition from Sen. Jon Husted on his list of 2025 Service Academy Nominations. Husted announced his first nominations to the U.S. Service Academies for the upcoming academic year starting in the summer. Local student Grant Bauer, a senior at Huron High School, made the list. There are five military service academies, including the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy. For students to be appointed, the applicants must be nominated by an authorized source, like a member of Congress. They are evaluated on their academics, athletics, extracurricular participation and community service. In-person interviews were also conducted by Husted's office. Bauer was nominated by Husted to join the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. "The nominees I presented to the academies today represent the best of America and carry the strong Ohio values of hard work, discipline, resilience and integrity," Husted said. "They are the exact people we need to be leaders in our Armed Forces, and I'm confident their fellow Ohioans will be proud as they carry their passion for service throughout their lives and careers." Congress members can nominate up to 55 students every year. This list includes up to 15 applicants to the Air Force, military and naval academies and 10 to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The United States Coast Guard Academy does not need a nomination. "Choosing to serve your nation in the Armed Forces is among the highest callings," Husted said. "I'm proud of these students for their commitment to academics, athletics and service to their community, and I'm honored to nominate them for admission to our service academies."
