Firelands spotlights volunteer Janet Cummings

SANDUSKY — For December, Firelands Health placed its monthly volunteer spotlight on Janet Cummings. She began volunteering at Firelands Regional Medical Center in June 2024, currently serving at the information desk "where her friendly face is among the first to welcome visitors to the hospital." Originally from western Pennsylvania, Cummings moved to the area in the 1980s. This month, she and her husband will celebrate 39 years of marriage. They share one child. In her free time, Cummings enjoys photography, quilt piecing, reading, traveling and spending time with her family. Prior to retiring nearly 20 years ago, Cummings spent 26 years as a high school math teacher at Perkins Schools. Her life has been marked by service, including volunteering with Care & Share of Erie County and Cancer Services. Cummings has also served on the Sandusky AARP's tax assistance team. She has been active in Zonta International, the Zonta Club of Greater Sandusky and the Kappa Phi Club, a national Christian women's organization. For Cummings, the best part of volunteering, to her, is connecting with people: patients, visitors and employees alike, the statement read. Many are former students, parents of students or former colleagues. "Janet feels very fortunate to work with caring, knowledgeable, understanding and friendly staff who are very dedicated to their jobs," the statement read. "Thank you, Janet for your warm smile, unwavering commitment and joy you bring to everyone at Firelands Health."
