Contest creates festive facades

SANDUSKY — With their artwork, they truly brought the spirit of Christmas alive all across downtown Sandusky. Several local artists livened up street-facing storefront windows throughout the city's central business corridor, coloring these transparent panels and transforming them into festive facades at many prominent businesses. They all took part in a friendly competition — known as the Downtown Holiday Storefront Decorating Contest, organized by Destination Sandusky — to get locals and visitors in a jolly mood. "All the artists and small businesses brought so much cheer to downtown Sandusky this season and truly make it feel like walking in a snow globe," according to a statement from Destination Sandusky, overseen by the Greater Sandusky Partnership. "Take a stroll, take your time and see them all." Destination Sandusky also gave shout-outs to specific artwork in various categories as judged by a panel. Here are the winners with excerpts provided by Destination Sandusky: • The Merry & Bright Award went to Daly's Pub — "Complete with tavern humor and well-wishes, the mix of artistic mischief wrapped in Christmas lights made this a favorite." • The Classic Christmas Award went to Henry's Shoppes — It's "reminiscent of an old Macy's window with animatronic bears putting lights on the tree and giving full 'Miracle on 34th Street' vibes." • The Humor Award went to Mr. Smith's Coffee House — It's "filled with jolly elves, who bore a striking resemblance to the staff, concocting sugary and caffeinated beverages that can't help but make you smile." • The Creative Award went to Sora & Oak Sushi & Whiskey Bar for artwork — There are "Asian influences woven into holiday classics, featuring nigiri Santa, California-roll holly, anime-style reindeer and a whole cast of imaginative characters." • Honorable mentions also went to artwork outside of Osupplies.com, Cheekz Burgers and Musicians' Alley. After debuting in 2023, the contest didn't occur in 2024. But organizers, going forward, want to make this an annual tradition for many different reasons. "The contest supports small business engagement while helping create a downtown environment that brings people together and celebrates the holiday season," said Alissa Fisher, the partnership's marketing and creative services director. "The initiative reflects how placemaking efforts and local businesses can work together to create meaningful experiences for the community."
