Norwalk's Vanderpool makes Div. III first team

COLUMBUS — After a record-breaking career, Norwalk senior punter Tommy Vanderpool received the state's highest honor Wednesday. The Ohio Prep Sports Media Association released the Division III All-Ohio teams and Vanderpool was selected as one of two punters on the first team. He punted 31 times for 1,189 yards, good for a 38.4 average. Vanderpool, who also broke his own program record for distances with punts of 69 and 72 yards, respectively, was 9 for 10 on extra point attempts and 5 for 8 on field goals for the Truckers, who finished 3-7. Vanderpool made field goals of 47 and 50 yards, while his two shortest kicks helped Norwalk to victories. In the season opener, he kicked a 36-yard field goal in overtime after missing the rest of the game due to an oblique injury in a 17-14 win at Toledo Start on Aug. 22. He added a 19-yard field goal as time expired for a 31-28 win over Sandusky on Oct. 17. "I'm excited for Tommy to receive this recognition," Norwalk coach Keith Mora said. "Tommy has gotten better every year and it was his commitment to being his best that has gotten him to where he is today. "Tommy became someone that we trusted not only with field goals and kickoffs, but also with being able to flip the field on punts." Also earning all-state recognition for the Truckers was senior left guard Nathan King, who was honorable mention offensive line. King helped Norwalk rush for 370 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Sandusky, which snapped a 21-game losing streak in league play. "Nathan seemed to get better every week for us," Mora said. "He was a leader on our offensive line, and with us needing to rotate linemen at times, he remained the pillar of leadership on that unit. "When we needed two or three yards, we knew that we could run the ball behind Nate and get what was needed." Offensive Player of the Year honors in Division III went to Columbus Watterson quarterback Drew Bellisari, and running back Lance Cantrell from Oxford Talawanda. Bellisari went 30-0 as a starter and led the Eagles to back-to-back state titles. The Miami University commit threw for 2,515 yards and 30 touchdowns and ran for 697 yards and 11 touchdowns. Cantrell ran for 2,523 yards and 30 touchdowns for the Braves. Defensive Player of the Year was shared by Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy linebacker Joey Kopec, a Rutgers commit, and Toledo Central Catholic defensive back Victor Singleton, a Texas A&M commit. Tiffin Columbian had two third team Div. III picks — senior wide receiver Johnny Bremyer and senior defensive lineman Neven Neuman. The Tornadoes' Blake Miller, a junior linebacker, made the honorable mention list. Information used for the All-Ohio teams comes from the regular-season accomplishments and does not include playoff games. The seven districts of the OPSMA determine the all-district teams and nominate their best for the All-Ohio teams.
