Costly mistakes, turnovers hurt Sandusky in loss

SANDUSKY — Too many turnovers and too many missed easy ones cost Sandusky. The Blue Streaks played right with undefeated Keystone, but 25 turnovers and numerous missed shots inside the paint hurt them in the end. Sandusky has a lesson to learn after Monday's 70-57 non-league loss to the Wildcats. "We missed a lot of easy shots," Blue Streaks coach John Winborn said. "I think I counted in my head five early on in the first quarter. If we make, let's say three of them, that's six points. That changes the complexion of the game, especially in girls basketball. That gives them a lot of confidence. "Those are shots we practice. As a coach, I have to figure out if we're going too fast or are we overly excited." Winborn also pointed out the end of the first quarter as a deflating moment. Sandusky (1-4) led 13-12 after a score from Cassidy Stovall, but Keystone (5-0) had the last say. Madyson Sokolowski hit a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats the lead. After an empty possession by the Blue Streaks, she connected on a half-court triple to push Keystone up 18-13 after one quarter. The Wildcats carried the momentum into the second quarter, going up 23-15 after a bucket from Kendal Crabeels. Later, Jayda Gaines' score finished off an 8-0 run by Keystone. "We had a couple lapses on defense," Winborn said. "(Sokolowski) is very good. She's very good. She made us pay. (Gaines) made us pay at times, too. We just can't have those lapses. We're a young team still. We're trying to find ourselves. We need that confidence in ourselves." Khiya Rameau, Shauntha Wilson and Stovall did their best to keep Sandusky in the game. Rameau scored to stop the Wildcats' run. Later, Stovall knocked in two free throws before a 3 from Journey Newell brought Sandusky within 33-24. But, a bucket from Sokolowski gave Keystone a double-digit lead at halftime. The Blue Streaks hung around the rest of the way, but never really put a run together to threaten the Wildcats. In the third quarter, Brooklyen Slater scored off of an offensive rebound for Sandusky before Rameau did the same. That got the Blue Streaks as close as 36-29. But, Sokolowski scored and added a triple to push the lead back to 12. Later, Wilson's score made it 47-36, but again, Sokolowski had the answer. Her tally with six seconds to go in the quarter gave Keystone a 49-36 edge after three quarters. Sandusky only sliced within single digits once in the fourth quarter. Rameau scored to open the quarter before Amari Prentice canned a 3. But, the turnovers in the first three quarters were too much to overcome. Sandusky had 23 turnovers in the first three quarters, putting it behind the 8-ball throughout. "We'll get it together. I'm not worried about it," Winborn said. "At the same time, four of these five games I thought were winnable. For a team like this, we need those girls to be confident." Sokolowski led Keystone with 30 points while Gaines finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. Rameau (seven rebounds) paced Sandusky with 17 points. Stovall tallied 12 points while Wilson added eight points and 11 rebounds. "The sky is the limit with them," Winborn said. "Khiya is a gamer. How you see her play in games, that's how she is in practice. The same thing with Shauntha. I think she got a little down on herself because they made things difficult for her. I told her that teams make note of what you're doing and they're going to make things difficult." Sandusky is back in action Friday when it continues Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division play at Perkins (2-2, 1-0 SBC Lake). "We'll review this film and get better than we were today," Winborn said. "When everyone comes out and sees us Friday, they're going to see something different from us. That's the SBC for you. We'll be ready. We'll have them prepared. It's a rivalry game. "It's like Ohio State and Michigan. It doesn't take much. They'll be ready to play."
