Vermilion honors veterans

VERMILION — On Tuesday, for Veterans Day, Vermilion residents gathered at Exchange Park to honor the nation's veterans and dedicate a new Gold Star memorial stone. The memorial recognizes U.S. Armed Forces members who gave their lives in service. It also pays homage to surviving family members who continue to grieve such a loss. In Vermilion, the memorial stone recognizes military members who died during various wars. This would include the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Many people united to organize and lead the ceremony. This would include veterans representing numerous local veteran service organizations with fellow service members, city officials and community residents in attendance. The program opened with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. It continued with the laying of a wreath and reflections on the quiet resolve, courage and patriotism of those who serve. Vermilion Mayor Jim Forthofer noted that veterans make up only about 7% of the nation's population, yet their sacrifices protect the freedoms all Americans enjoy. He thanked those gathered for their service and continued contributions to the community. The event concluded with a benediction and the formal dedication of the Gold Star Memorial stone, honoring Vermilion residents who gave their futures so others could have today. A luncheon hosted by the AMVETS followed the ceremony.
