Stay safe with space heaters, generators

SANDUSKY — Before the winter season officially starts, Sandusky firefighters recently posted a public service announcement to ensure safe practices with space heaters, generators and smoke/carbon monoxide alarms. Nationwide, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: • Space heaters are responsible for 1,700 fires per year, including 160 injuries and 80 deaths. • Generators are responsible for more than 700-related poisoning deaths from 2010 to 2020 with most occurring between November and February. Among the tips shared by Sandusky fire in partnership with the commission: Space heaters • Keep combustibles at least 3 feet away • Use a wall outlet and never a power strip • Don't leave them running unattended in a confined space to reduce hyperthermia hazards Generators • Use portable generators outside only and at least 20 feet from a home • Never use a generator inside a home, basement, shed or garage even with the door open Smoke/Carbon monoxide alarms • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and inside each bedroom • Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas • Test the alarms every month to make sure they are working
