Sandusky salutes military members

SANDUSKY — Sandusky students spent their Monday afternoon thanking those who made sacrifices for them. For the first time, Sandusky High School opened its doors to the community's veterans as a way to give back to those who served the country, according to high school principal Edward Kosek. "These are people who weren't forced to do the job," Edward said. "They volunteered. When they get done, the adjustment back into the civilian world is extremely difficult, and people overlook their sacrifice. And if we can make this a special day for them, that's what we want to do." The veterans were invited to a meal and recognized during a ceremony featuring music and speakers, including state representatives DJ Swearingen, R-Huron, and Sean Brennan, D-Parma. Edward opened the ceremony by welcoming the guests and recognizing district staff members who have served in the military, such as Bob Eis, a current paraprofessional and veteran of the Army, who also spoke about his military journey during the ceremony. Each speaker took time with the microphone to share gratitude for those who have served and inspiration for those in the audience to strive for success. Brennan started his speech by thanking the veterans in the audience because "that's why we're here today and that's why we're here today," as in the school was gathered to thank them for their service, and the country is the way that it is because of them. After sharing his story on what it was like growing up in the area and the struggles he faced along the way, Brennan recognized the country as being one where anyone can reach a dream and achieve a goal, no matter where they come from. Swearingen took the stand next to speak on success and fulfilling a calling, whether that is a military branch or anything else. Before taking the microphone, Swearignen had lunch with a veteran who served in Afghanistan. While with the veteran, he reflected on what it takes to serve. He said veterans have the courage to put themselves on the line and come out with stories of bravery. The third and final speaker was Eis, who spoke about why he decided to serve. In his sophomore year of high school, he was labeled as "the crash survivor" after losing two friends in a car accident. This event led him to change his attitude and how he treated himself and others, so he joined the Army. Eis said services taught him how great the country is, pushed him to be better and defined fraternity and brotherhood. He ended his speech by pushing students to follow in his footsteps because the experience will prepare them for whatever is thrown at them. The ceremony closed with the high school's band playing the Armed Forces melody and each branch's members standing when hearing their anthem. Edward said he hoped his students would take away something meaningful and if they are unsure of what to do with their future, explore the option of service. "I want our kids to know the military is a viable option," Edward said. "If they're not planning on going to college or planning to go straight into a career after graduating, the military is a great option." Edward said he comes from a military family with several relations to those who have served, including himself; his father-in-law; and his daughter, Bree Kosek, whom he described as his hero. Bree was in the list of veterans who decided to participate in the event. She said Edward invited her out and she just couldn't say no. The event all around was something Bree enjoyed. She said it was all amazing and well put together. Bree served in the Air Force for four years and did so to give herself better opportunities. She and her father both mentioned pursuing an education after serving. Edward said she is taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, which helps veterans with schooling. Edward thanked the organizations that helped bring the celebration to life, like the American Legion, the VFW Post 2529, the district's dining services, among others.
