UPDATED: Car crash at Chick-fil-A

PERKINS TWP. — Police confirmed that a vehicle wrecked on the property of a busy fast-food restaurant on Monday evening, which prompted multiple officers from multiple agencies to respond to the scene. But as of late Tuesday, law enforcement released little information on what occurred at Chick-fil-A on Milan Road (U.S. 250). The Ohio State Highway Patrol is handling the investigation and was assisted by Perkins police, Perkins police Chief Jeff Musser said. When contacted Tuesday morning, the patrol's Sandusky post said it did not have a report available and that troopers who participated in the crash response Monday were off-duty and unavailable to take questions at that time. Franchise owner Dave Baumgartner told the newspaper that the restaurant closed for the night Monday after the crash occurred, but that it reopened as normal Tuesday after repairs were made. Perkins report While they handed over the investigation to the patrol, Perkins police did write a brief report shedding some light on what occurred. At about 5:45 p.m., police responded after a report of one vehicle striking other cars and a gas line, causing a gas leak, at Chick-fil-A, according to the agency's report. Once on scene, officers found a damaged GMC and a damaged Mitsubishi, the latter of which was resting against the side of the restaurant. Due to the presence of a gas leak, officers evacuated those in the immediate vicinity. Witnesses said they saw the Mitsubishi "traveling at a high rate of speed" north on U.S. 250 and that the vehicle was driving on the sidewalk before it turned and drove through Chick-fil-A's median, the report states. The Mitsubishi then struck the GMC and the building's gas line. Another person who spoke to officers later also said the same Mitsubishi struck his vehicle on U.S. 250 prior to the crash at the restaurant, the report states. Perkins officers then called a tow truck and noted in their report that they were handing the crash scene over to state troopers. The report does not specifically identify the at-fault driver, state if that driver or any others were hurt or state if the driver was charged; any charges would have been handled by the patrol.
