Cedar Point parent co. considering park sales

SANDUSKY — Cedar Point's parent company, Six Flags Entertainment Corp., announced during its Friday earnings call that it's exploring the possibility of selling some of its theme parks as it works to manage nearly $5 billion in debt. The move comes even as attendance at the company's parks, including Cedar Point, ticked upward this past quarter. For the three-month period ending Sept. 28, Six Flags reported attendance of 21.1 million guests, a 1.1% increase over the same period last year. But that boost didn't translate into stronger profits. Net revenue fell 2% to $1.32 billion. And adjusted earnings — before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, a key measure of profitability — were down $3 million from 2024, totaling $555 million for the quarter. Brian Witherow, chief financial officer, said the summer started strong. He cited that combined attendance in July and August increased by about 2%, translating to 300,000 visits. "However, following Labor Day weekend, we saw a downturn in demand trends as attendance for the month of September declined approximately 5% or roughly 160,000 visits," he said. Witherow said about 70% of the company's parks are performing well, while 30% have underperformed. That divide is now shaping the company's next steps. "As we look ahead, our road map for the underperforming parks centers on two primary pathways," he said. "Migrating those parks toward the performance profile of our best properties or classifying them as non-core and divesting them where it makes strategic and financial sense." While Six Flags didn't identify which parks might be considered for sale, the company emphasized confidence in the overall industry. "Despite the performance volatility over the course of this year, we believe the regional amusement park business remains fundamentally solid," Witherow said. "Several of these parks are on track to record record or near-record performances. These results underscore the long-term viability of the business model and reaffirm the central thesis behind our strategy: When we invest in product quality, operational reliability and the guest experience, consumer demand follows." Any local ramifications? For fans of Cedar Point, often called "The Roller Coaster Capital of the World," the announcement is bound to raise eyebrows. The park became part of the Six Flags family last year when the company completed its merger with Cedar Fair, bringing 42 parks under one corporate umbrella. At this point, there's no indication that Cedar Point — one of the company's strongest performers — would be affected by any potential sales. In fact, Six Flags' strategy appears focused on strengthening its top-tier parks and finding new paths forward for those that lag behind. Still, theme park fans are paying close attention, possibly wondering: • Could any legacy Cedar Fair parks be classified as "non-core"? • Will Six Flags slow new investments as it works to reduce debt? • What might this mean for 2026 season passes or pricing? For now, Six Flags says it remains committed to improving the guest experience and continuing to invest in the parks that perform best — a category that clearly includes Cedar Point.
