Benton-Carroll-Salem, Port Clinton in the championship

OAK HARBOR — Three local districts made their way to Oak Harbor High School where students competed in an academic competition. The high school recently hosted fifth- through eighth-grade students from Danbury, Port Clinton and Benton-Carroll-Salem for the county's match in the Academic Challenge. Students were excited to come together to show what they heard, seen and learned inside and outside of the classroom. By the end of the competition, fifth-grade students from Benton-Carroll-Salem, and sixth-, seventh0 and eighth-grade students from Port Clinton were determined the winners who will continue in the competition. At each competition, students are questioned on categories like World War II, the Revolutionary War, time zones and states as well as U.S. rivers, presidents, eclipses and the people in their assigned books. Each county also receives specific questions about where they are from. Ottawa County was asked about the Erie-Ottawa International Airport, Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station, African Safari Wildlife Park and events like the Minnow Drop on New Year's Eve before the Walleye Drop. Fifth-grade students from Benton-Carroll-Salem, and sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from Port Clinton will meet the winners of the other counties at the Championship of Champions match next month. This year, 30 schools across four counties are competing against each other in an academic competition where they answer questions on a variety of topics. Teams, separated by grade level, first compete against others in their counties in the regular season. Then the winners from each county competition will compete against each other in the Championship of Champions on Dec. 9 at BGSU Firelands in Huron. The final county competition will take place at the Milestone Event Center in Norwalk on Nov. 10 with teams from Norwalk, Norwalk Catholic, Bellevue, Western Reserve, New London, South Central and Monroeville St. Joseph. Parents and friends are welcome to come to any of the contests. All competitions are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. unless a school is delayed for some reason.
