Edison, Perkins head to championship

SANDUSKY — Three teams from Edison and one from Perkins will join other local students as they compete in the championship round of the Academic Challenge in December. Schools in Erie County recently concluded their matches in the Academic Challenge. Teams were questioned on what they learn in life, the classroom and from others. Specifically, they answered questions on topics including World War II, the Revolutionary War, time zones and states as well as U.S. rivers, presidents, eclipses and the people in their assigned books. Sandusky County also completed its matches with teams from Solomon and Gibsonburg, heading to the championship match, where they will go against other county winners like Edison and Perkins. Carroll said the best part of her first competition was when she found out her team won. She felt "Excited because I wasn't expecting to get first place," Carroll said. Looking into her team's future, Carroll said she is nervous for the championship round because it will be the first time she and the others on her team will be in that setting. Despite these nerves, Carroll said she is having fun and plans to try out for the team next year What is Academic Challenge? This year, 30 schools across four counties are competing against each other in an academic competition where they answer questions on a variety of topics. Teams, separated by grade level, first compete against others in their counties in the regular season. Then the winners from each county competition will compete against each other in the Championship of Champions on Dec. 9 at BGSU Firelands in Huron. This year's remaining schedule is: • Ottawa County: Nov. 5 for fifth and sixth grade and Nov. 6 for seventh and eighth grade at Oak Harbor High School • Huron County: Nov. 10 for fifth through eighth grade at Milestone Event Center in Norwalk Parents and friends are welcome to come to any of the contests. All competitions are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. unless a school is delayed for some reason.
