Attempted murder suspect indicted

SANDUSKY — A grand jury recently indicted a Castalia man accused of allegedly firing a gun at someone's head during a dispute in September. On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Terry D. Nickles, 63, of the 9000 block of Ohio 101, was indicted by an Erie County grand jury on the following charges: • Seven counts of having weapons while under disability, each a third-degree felony • Four counts of felonious assault, each a second-degree felony • Two counts of attempted murder, each a first-degree felony • One count of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony • One count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony According to Nickles' indictment, the alleged crimes occurred on or about Sept. 9, when Nickles allegedly attempted to cause the death of two people. Background At approximately 8 p.m. on Sept. 9, Erie County Sheriff's deputies were called to the parking lot of the Castalia Quarry MetroPark for the report of a shooting. After further investigation, deputies determined that a dispute had occurred between Nickles and five young men. Nickels reportedly contacted the sheriff's office earlier that day regarding trespassers on his property near the quarry on Ohio 101 in Margaretta Township. Later that day, Nickels allegedly went to the quarry's parking lot to confront a group that was about to enter the quarry due to park signage indicating that it closes at dusk. Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth said that after Nickles approached the group and told them that the park was closed, an argument ensued, and Nickles allegedly produced a firearm. Nickles reportedly fired a shot at one of the men's heads, but it missed. He then allegedly tried to shoot at another man, but the gun appeared to have jammed, Sigsworth said. Nickles was released from the Erie County Jail on a $200,000 bond, according to court records. Nickles has no upcoming court hearings scheduled at this time.
