Storing Dahlia tubers over winter

As autumn fades and the first frost arrives in northern Ohio, gardeners turn their attention to protecting tender plants from the coming cold. Among the most prized of these are dahlias—known for their bold blooms and long summer color. Since dahlias are not winter-hardy in this region, proper storage of their tubers is crucial to ensure success next year. Wait until a hard frost blackens the foliage before digging up your dahlia tubers. This signals the plant has entered dormancy, and energy has returned to the roots. Cut back the stems to about 4–6 inches above the ground, then carefully lift the clump with a garden fork or spade. Avoid damaging the tubers, as even small cuts can invite rot during storage. Once dug, gently shake off excess soil, but avoid washing the tubers immediately. Allow them to dry for a few hours in a sheltered, frost-free location. Afterward, rinse away remaining dirt with a garden hose and let the tubers dry completely for one to two days in a frost-free, well-ventilated space. Proper drying helps prevent mold and decay later in storage. Inspect the tubers for insects or disease. You may choose to dust the bulbs with an insecticide–fungicide. Check the product label and follow the instructions. Be sure to label each variety, including the cultivar name and identifying information such as plant height and color of the blooms. Dahlia tubers keep best when surrounded by a slightly moist material that prevents them from drying out. Good options include peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust. Line a cardboard box or ventilated bin with newspaper and layer the tubers so they don't touch each other, covering each layer with your chosen medium. The goal is to maintain a cool, dark, and dry environment—ideally between 40°F and 50°F and 50 percent humidity. Even in ideal conditions, dahlia tubers benefit from periodic checks during winter. Inspect them monthly for signs of shriveling, mold, or disease. Remove any decayed tubers immediately to prevent the spread of rot. If the tubers appear wrinkled or shriveled, lightly mist the packing medium. If the medium is too damp, increase ventilation to dry out the packing medium. As spring approaches and temperatures begin to rise, bring your stored dahlias out of dormancy by placing them in a warmer area. Check for firm, healthy tubers with visible eyes or new sprouts. They can then be potted indoors or planted outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Properly stored dahlia tubers reward your effort with strong, vibrant blooms year after year. Taking a little time in the fall to lift, clean, and store them correctly ensures your garden will burst with color once again next summer.
