Top-seeded Margaretta among 8 area playoff teams

Eight area football teams qualified for the OHSAA playoffs and two earned byes into the second round. Margaretta, which won its final nine games in the regular season, is the No. 1 seed in Division VI Region 22. Monroeville is the No. 4 seed in Division VII Region 25. There will be four playoff games Friday involving area teams. Edison hosts Port Clinton in Division V Region 18 in one of two postseason matchups featuring two area qualifiers. "It's another chance to show off the field and the facilities and these guys get to play here again and that's special," Edison coach Jim Hall said. "It's easy to take some things for granted, but this is special." The 11th-seeded Redskins (6-4) defeated sixth-seeded Edison (7-3) 21-17 at PC in Week 8. Edison led 14-0 after the first quarter, but PC shut out the Chargers in the second half and won the game on a touchdown run by Malakii Pinkelton in the fourth quarter. The winner of the rematch will travel to third-seeded Genoa (9-1) in the second round. In Division IV, fifth-seeded Bellevue (7-3) will host 12th-seeded Clyde (4-6) in the first round. The Fliers edged Vermilion (5-5) by 0.15 playoff points for the final playoff spot in Region 14. Bellevue defeated the Sailors 16-6 last Friday. The winner travels to Lima Bath (8-2) in the second round. Bellevue defeated Clyde 33-23 in Week 1. Perkins (7-3), the No. 6 seed in Region 14, will host Lorain Clearview (5-5). The Pirates, last year's state runner-up in D-IV, will take a six-game winning streak into the playoffs. Clearview has won four straight, including impressive wins against 9-1 Columbia (27-21) and 6-4 Keystone (20-19) in weeks 9 and 10. Undefeated Shelby is the No. 1 seed in Region 14. A win would send the Pirates to third-seeded Napoleon (8-2) for a rematch of a chippy third-round playoff matchup last year, which Perkins won 35-21. Napoleon has won seven straight. In Division VI, Margaretta posted a hard-fought 9-6 win over Gibsonburg on Friday to complete a 9-1 regular season. The Polar Bears moved up to the No. 1 seed in Region 22 in the final ratings after previous No. 1 Archbold lost to Liberty Center. Margaretta, which is ranked No. 5 in the state in Martin RPI's Division VI power rankings, will host the Patrick Henry-Carey winner in the regional quarterfinals on Nov. 7. Hopewell-Loudon is the No. 2 seed in Region 22. In Division VII, ninth-seeded St. Paul will travel to eighth-seeded Warren JFK in the first round. Both teams are 5-5. The winner will play at top-seeded McDonald (10-0) in the second round. Monroeville (8-2) will rest up and host the Malvern-Ashtabula St. John winner in Round 2. The top 12 teams in each of 28 regions across seven divisions qualified for the postseason. The top four in each region received first round byes. Higher seeds will host games through the first three rounds.
