FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: SMCC pummels Holgate

HOLGATE — Bryan Gibson scored four touchdowns, leading St. Mary Central Catholic to a 51-24 Northern 8 Conference victory Friday over Holgate. The Panthers (9-1, 6-1 N8) jumped ahead 14-0 after touchdown runs of 14 and 8 yards by Gibson. SMCC pushed the lead when Josh Will caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Cullen Dillard. Dillard then hit Ben Jones for a 28-yard touchdown before Cayden Wikel returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown. That gave SMCC a 32-0 lead after one quarter. Dillard extended the lead to 38-0 with a 51-yard run in the second quarter. Gibson added touchdown runs of 19 and 55 yards to wrap up the scoring for SMCC. The Panthers will play in the N8 playoffs next weekend. Who and where they play will be determined by Saturday night's contest between Danbury and Chalker. Young opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown run. Mitch Newsome added the first of his four extra points as Clyde (4-6, 2-2 SBC Lake) went up 7-0 at the midway point of the first quarter. Newsome added a 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter before Thomas Vanderpool answered with a 28-yard field goal of his own. That brought Norwalk (3-7, 1-3) within 10-3 with 6:57 left in the second quarter. Clyde had the immediate response as Dekin Crockett caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from Jonathan Lantz. Newsome's extra point made it 17-3. Newsome added a 36-yard field goal with 1:28 to go until halftime. Young recorded the only two scores of the second half. He scored on runs of 2 and 5 yards in the third quarter, pushing the game into a running clock. Lantz completed 11 of 15 passes for 269 yards. Crockett had four catches for 141 yards.
