Solomon, Gibsonburg in the championship

CLYDE — The Sandusky County Academic Challenge — with teams made up of fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students — has concluded for another school year. Enthusiastic students from five school districts — Clyde, Fremont, Gibsonburg, Lakota and Solomon Lutheran — arrived ready to share what they had learned in life, the classroom and from others as they answered questions about World War II, the Revolutionary War, time zones and states as well as U.S. rivers, presidents, eclipses and the people in their assigned books. Those teams made up of fifth-grade students finished separated by only three points. All this happened after an exciting tie-breaker round took place. • Lakota: 23 points • Clyde: 24 points • Solomon: 25 points In the match of sixth-grade students: • Lakota: 5 points • Clyde : 7 points • Fremont: 20 points • Solomon: 21 points • Gibsonburg: 31 points On the second day, the seventh- and eighth-grade teams competed. Here are the seventh-grade team scores: • Fremont: 11 points • Solomon: 16 points • Lakota: 17 points • Clyde: 21 points • Gibsonburg: 31 points The eighth-grade teams also ended in a tie - this time for second place. The results: • Lakota: 13 points • Clyde: 14 points • Fremont: 15 points • Gibsonburg: 39 points The competitions were enjoyed by parents and advisers alike. The first-place teams at every level are invited to the Championship of Champions Match, which will take place after all four of the county contests have determined first-place winners. This year, the fifth- and sixth-grade first-place teams will compete on Dec. 9 at BGSU Firelands in Huron. What is Academic Challenge? This year, 30 schools across four counties are competing against each other in an academic competition where they answer questions on a variety of topics. Teams, separated by grade level, first compete against others in their counties in the regular season. Then the winners from each county competition will compete against each other in the Championship of Champions this December. This year's remaining schedule is: • Erie County: Oct. 28 for fifth and sixth grade and Oct. 29 for seventh and eighth grade at Sandusky Nazarene Community Church • Ottawa County: Nov. 5 for fifth and sixth grade and Nov. 6 for seventh and eighth grade at Oak Harbor High School • Huron County: Nov. 10 for fifth through eighth grade at Milestone Event Center in Norwalk Parents and friends are welcome to come to any of the contests. All competitions are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. unless a school is delayed for some reason.
