Local students explore manufacturing careers

HURON TWP. — Students from area schools gained hands-on experience in the manufacturing industry on Oct. 17 during the STEM Day: Manufacturing Career Camp at BGSU Firelands. STEM stands for four foundational educational subjects: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Many entities — BGSU Firelands, Future Plans, the Greater Sandusky Partnership, MAGNET and Ohio Means Jobs of Erie County — came together to sponsor this event. Here's a recap of what happened: • Students from Huron, Edison, Vermilion, Townsend, Sandusky, Perkins and Margaretta began the day by participating in a lean manufacturing activity run by Dr. Michelle Brodke of BGSU Firelands. • The students toured area businesses, including AkzoNobel, Humanetics, Kalahari Resorts & Conventions and American Colors where they could explore local opportunities in manufacturing. American Colors "was happy to take the time to welcome the students and give them an inside look at local manufacturing," company shipping manager Jim Sayre said. "We hope they were able to see and understand the difference they can make working in manufacturing as well as discover the wide range of career opportunities that are possible." • The students also participated in an interactive STEM activity facilitated on campus by MAGNET, an acronym for the Cleveland-based Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network. In the activity, they designed and built a mechanical toy. "We loved being a part of the Career Camp," said Jennie Beckler, manager of experiential learning at MAGNET. "It allowed us to reach over 120 students in Erie County and show them what a career in manufacturing can be by giving them a chance to be mechanical toy designers and builders. We were impressed by the students' engagement and can't wait to come back." In a nutshell, the camp gave participants an inside look at local manufacturing operations, the technologies used and potential career opportunities in the field. "We learned so much during our visit, and the experience was a valuable addition to our classroom learning," according to one student from Huron High School. "One thing I enjoyed was the robot dog during the lunch period. It was very fascinating and fun to watch." Students gained valuable insight and knowledge. They received opportunities to connect with local professionals, engage in hands-on STEM activities and learn about the variety of careers available in the greater Sandusky area's manufacturing sector. "This event gives students the chance to see real manufacturing career paths in action at local companies," said Jarvis Cole-Caston, the partnership's talent development and engagement manager. "It's more than just a field trip: It's a hands-on experience that connects what they're learning in the classroom to real opportunities in Erie County."
