School-based health center gets $500K

CASTALIA — A state grant provided a huge boost for a new local facility to provide essential care in an underserved area. This past week, the Erie County Health Department and the Erie County Community Health Center secured a $500,000 grant, coming from the Ohio Department of Health, to establish what's known as a school-based health center in Castalia. More specifically, it'll be located within the Margaretta Middle/High School building. The funding, which covers 100% of all start-up costs, "marks a major step forward in expanding accessible health care for students and local families," according to a health department statement. Margaretta marks the fourth school-based health center operated by Erie County's health agency, "adding to its existing, successful centers located at Vermilion High School, EHOVE Career Center and Sandusky Career Center." Upon opening, Margaretta's facility "will provide essential primary and mental health services as well as pharmacy services." "This center will allow us to intervene early, provide continuous support and ensure that health challenges do not stand in the way of a student's education or a family's well-being," said Joe Palmucci, CEO of the county's health center. Like the county's other school-based health centers, it will be staffed by licensed and credentialed doctors, nurses, counselors and support staff. Its school-based health center will be fully funded by the health department and outside grant sources. The $500,000 grant represented the largest financial hurdle in getting this facility open, officials said. Q: Will patients be able to afford this? A: For patients worrying about costs, the health department has agreements with most private insurances as well as Medicare and Medicaid and offers a sliding fee scale for those without insurance coverage. "No one will be denied service because of an inability to pay," according to a health department/community health center statement. Q: Why are facilities like this needed? A: The establishment of this school-based health center addresses a critical need for primary health, oral health and mental health services within the Margaretta and Castalia communities, which currently face a lack of such accessible care options. The health department today provides essential school nursing services to Margaretta Schools. Additionally, the Erie County Health Department regularly uses its mobile health vehicle within the district, offering vital dental screenings and services to Margaretta students. At the most recent event, all children who are on the twice-yearly dental schedule were found to have no cavities, highlighting the effectiveness of preventive care and the existing collaborative efforts. This collaborative initiative underscores the commitment of the Erie County Health Department, the Erie County Community Health Center and Margaretta Schools to fostering a healthier, more resilient community. Margaretta Schools' board of education has already committed to the school-based health center being part of the new Margaretta building/campus. There are plans in place for the location of the school-based health center at the new building so that the transition will be seamless. "We have worked with agencies to have social and emotional supports right in school," Margaretta Schools superintendent Ed Kurt said. "Now, with the collaboration with the Erie County Health Department, we would have on-site health care for both students and employees."
