Women: Get screened for breast cancer

SANDUSKY — October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which, across the nation, brings attention to breast cancer, promotes early detection and supports research for care. Locally, Sandusky-based Cancer Services — a nonprofit that provides free wigs, nutrition, medical equipment, transportation, personal care items and support to area cancer patients — spoke about the importance of this monthlong observation period. "Have you scheduled your mammogram yet," according to the nonprofit. "Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer. If you're 40 or older, it's time to take this important step for your health. Let's protect ourselves and each other." The nonprofit also published a fact sheet about screenings: Q: What is a mammogram? A: A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that allows doctors to look for changes in breast tissue. It's one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early, often before any symptoms are noticeable. Q: Who should get a mammogram? A: Specifically: • Women aged 40 to 44: Talk to your doctor about when to start annual mammograms • Women aged 45 to 54: Get a mammogram every year • Women 55 and older: Continue annual mammograms or switch to every two years Q: Why are mammograms important? A: Mammograms can detect cancer two to three years before a lump is felt. Early detection means less aggressive treatments and a higher survival rate. Breast cancer detected early is treated more successfully with a 99.5% five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer. "Don't wait: Call your health care provider to schedule your mammogram today," the nonprofit read. "Take care of yourself and encourage others to do the same."
