FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Monroeville wins share of Firelands Conference

OLIVESBURG — After trailing by two touchdowns early, Monroeville rallied for a key 28-26 Firelands Conference victory over Ashland Crestview on Friday. The win gave the Eagles (7-2, 6-0 FC) at least a share of the Firelands Conference title for a second consecutive year. Monroeville turned the ball over on downs to start the game and Crestview (5-4, 4-2) cashed in with a 15-yard touchdown run by Ayden Reymer. The extra point gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead with 1:53 left in the first quarter. Crestview used a bit of trickery on its next drive. Reymer took the handoff then threw a 52-yard halfback pass touchdown to Max Durbin to give Crestview a 14-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter. Monroeville got its offense going in the final four minutes of the first half. Colt Clark found Chase Horn on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 3:10 left in the second quarter. Isaac Krueger's extra point made it a 14-7 deficit. Monroeville then got a stop and regained possession and drove the length of the field. Clark scored from a yard out with just eight seconds left in the half. Krueger's extra point tied the game at 14. The Eagles kept things going in the second half. After forcing a punt, Connor Bores scored on a two-yard run with 3:59 left in the third to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive. Krueger's kick made it 21-14. Monroeville had a chance to increase the lead, but an interception by Clark in the end zone ended the drive. Crestview quarterback Liam Kuhn, who was injured in practice during the week, entered the game and on his third snap, found Carson Keener over the middle for an 87-yard touchdown. However, the Eagles were able to block the extra point, which proved critical as they kept a 21-20 lead with 10:51 remaining. Monroeville answered with a 10-yard touchdown run by Clark. Krueger made the extra point for a 28-20 lead with 9:37 left in the game. Crestview had the response as Kuhn capped it with a seven-yard touchdown run with 5:43 left. Trailing 28-26, the Cougars went for the tie and Cooper Cleary and Connor Bores knocked Reymer out of bounds at the 1 to keep the Eagles up by two. Monroeville recovered the onside kick attempt and were driving before a penalty pushed them back to a third-and-19 at midfield. The Eagles converted as Clark was able to find Horn for a 26-yard gain and a new set of downs with four minutes left. Later, Monroeville had the ball with third-and-goal at the Crestview 1 with just 1:16 left. A false start penalty on the Eagles was overturned, as the officials ruled Crestview defenders said something at the line of scrimmage to intentionally cause the penalty. Crestview's sideline was given a 15-yard penalty for arguing the call and the Eagles were awarded a first down and kneeled out the clock for the win. Clark ran 26 times for 205 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. He was also 7-of-14 passing for 125 yards while Bores ran for 66 yards on 14 attempts. Monroeville travels to St. Paul (5-4, 4-2) on Friday. Columbian 49, Clyde 20 TIFFIN — The Fliers' two-game winning streak was snapped in a Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division loss to Columbian. Adam Young tied the game at 7 early with a 14-yard touchdown run, but Logan Gooding was too much for Clyde (3-6, 1-2 SBC Lake). The Columbian quarterback was 14 of 21 passing for 219 yards and six touchdowns. Young finished with 21 carries for 113 yards. Clyde hosts Norwalk (3-6, 1-2) on Friday. Edison (6-3, 2-1 SBC Bay) was down 22-14 early in the fourth quarter when Ryder Kramb scored on a four-yard touchdown run. The conversion failed, keeping Vermilion (5-4, 1-2) ahead. The Sailors got a safety to go up 24-20, but Edison took the lead for good on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Cole Leimeister to Coltyn Meagrow. The Chargers host Huron (3-6, 1-2) on Friday while Vermilion travels to Bellevue (6-3, 2-1).
