Columbian blows by Clyde, 49-20

TIFFIN — Clyde entered Friday's contest against Tiffin Columbian on a two-game winning streak. The Fliers couldn't get much going as TC quarterback Logan Gooding threw six touchdown passes in the Tornadoes' 49-20 Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division win. "They played well," Clyde coach Ryan Carter said. "They played better than us tonight and they made plays when they had opportunities, so you have to give them credit. They made the plays when they had to." It started right away as Columbian took the opening possession right down the field for a score as Gooding found Johnny Bremyer for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Clyde (3-6, 1-2 SBC Lake) came right back with a score of its own. Adam Young knotted the game at 7 with a 14-yard touchdown run. After the first quarter ended tied at 7, the Tornadoes (5-4, 3-0) started to score and get off the field on defense, extending its lead. Gooding hit Blake Miller for a nine-yard score early in the second quarter and then hit him again – this time for a 23-yard touchdown on a wheel route to give the Tornadoes 21-7 advantage. Then with just 39 seconds left in the opening half, Gooding found Miller again for a 22-yard touchdown. Clyde tried to mount a comeback as Jonathan Lantz found Joel Greenslade for a 13-yard score to pull within 28-14. Clyde's defense made a stop on a third down, but an unsportsmanlike penalty extended TC's drive, which ended with a DaShawn Russell 36-yard touchdown catch. Bremyer then ran in a reverse for a 25-yard score to put TC up 42-14. "I thought we were the offense we should be and are capable of being … gritty up front, gritty in the backfield and then playmakers on both sides of the perimeter," Columbian coach Judd Lutz said. "In my opinion, there's no gaping holes, so when we weren't scoring points, we weren't executing. It was a great time to click tonight in a big game." Linkin Mullins ran in a seven-yard touchdown for the Fliers in the fourth, but Gooding capped the score when he hit Russell for a nine-yard touchdown. Gooding was 14 of 21 passing for 219 yards with the six touchdowns. Young finished with 21 carries for 113 yards. "We told the kids we get an opportunity to play next week," Carter said. "We'll go from there. They've been resilient all year. They've bounced back. This is a tough one to bounce back from, but we'll get after it tomorrow and get back to work next week."
