Yacht club celebrated for 70 years

HURON — Local officials recently recognized a yacht club anchored in the community for seven decades strong now. During a recent public meeting, members of the Huron Yacht Club received an official city proclamation read aloud by Mayor Monty Tapp. The proclamation honors past and present members while shining a light on its storied past. Here's an excerpt from the proclamation: • "The Huron city council is justly proud to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Huron Yacht Club and honor its past and present members for 70 years of the 'friendliest club on the lake.'" • "The Huron Yacht Club was established on Oct. 13, 1955, by Articles of Incorporation filed with the state of Ohio by Al Cawrse, Jack Dutt and Carl Swanbeck." • "The original trustees were Elmer Forthofer, Al Cawrse, Jack Dutt, Carl Swanbeck and John Wade." • "The original Huron Yacht Club was located at 400 Huron St., Huron." • "Flooding plagued the club's 400 Huron St. location for many years." • "The Huron Yacht Club purchased the wastewater treatment plant in 1987, which was located at 350 Huron St., Huron." • "The Huron Yacht Club transformed that building into the club we know today." • "A 22-slip marina and fuel dock were added shortly thereafter." • "The Huron Yacht Club has become a favorite spot for Huron boaters and non-boaters alike, growing to approximately 550 members." • "The Huron Yacht Club is a valued member of the Huron community and is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those it serves." • "The city of Huron, Ohio, hereby recognizes and congratulates the Huron Yacht Club on its 70th anniversary of service to our community and expresses its appreciation for the important work that it does on behalf of our citizens."
