Margaretta jumps to No. 4 in Division VI rankings

Margaretta is moving up in the Division VI football world. The Polar Bears jumped five slots — from a tie at No. 9 to No. 4 — in this week's Associated Press football poll, which was released Tuesday. The Bears also are one of two area teams that have clinched playoff spots. The other is Monroeville in Division VII. Margaretta has all but clinched a first round bye in the playoffs — those go to the top four teams in each region — and possibly could be the top seed in Region 22 with wins against SBC River Division opponents Lakota and Gibsonburg in weeks 9 and 10. The Bears are 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the River. Hopewell-Loudon and Gibsonburg are a game back at 4-1. "We've been on a roll and want to keep our momentum going," Margaretta coach Gary Quisno said. "If we can get a win Friday night we can at least have a share of the league championship, something that hasn't been done here since 2001. One game at a time." After three straight road games, Margaretta plays at home the next two weeks, which means the Duck Pond will be the place to be in Castalia. "Hopefully we'll get a good crowd," Quisno said. "I know the guys are excited." The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its official football computer ratings Tuesday. The top 12 teams in each region will make the playoffs, with the top four getting first-round byes. Margaretta is No. 2 in the Region 22. Archbold is No. 1 in the region and No. 3 in D-VI in the AP poll. Undefeated Kirtland and Columbiana Crestview are Nos. 1 and 2 in the AP poll. Six area football teams can join Margaretta and Monroeville in the postseason by unofficially clinching playoff spots with wins Friday night. Four of those teams — all in the SBC Bay Division and all with 5-3 records — play each other, essentially making two area Week 9 games postseason play-in contests. Edison travels to Vermilion and Bellevue travels to Port Clinton with the winner of those games punching playoff tickets. "For us it's about trying to win a tough game," Edison coach Jim Hall said. "Everyone in the Bay has a loss, so you control your own destiny. Obviously, if you accomplish that goal everything else falls into place." Perkins and St. Paul are the other area teams that can join the postseason fray with wins Friday. Perkins, which moved up three spots to No. 6 in the Division IV Region 14 computer ratings, hosts Huron. The Pirates visit Tiffin Columbian next week and are a projected 5 seed if they win out, according to Drew Pasteur's Fantastic 50, a website that predicts games and playoff qualifiers in Ohio. Perkins is ranked No. 16 in the Division IV AP poll. Shelby is No. 1. Defending state champion Indian Valley is No. 4 and Glenville is No. 7. Four of the 12 playoff teams in Region 14 could come from the Register coverage area. Along with Perkins, Vermilion and Bellevue need one more win to clinch and could get a home playoff game with two more wins. Vermilion travels to Bellevue in Week 10. Clyde, at 3-5, is hanging on at No. 12 in Region 14. The Fliers, who visit Columbian on Friday before closing the regular season at home against Norwalk, likely need one win to get in. Norwalk (2-6) needs to beat Sandusky at home this week and Clyde next week to get on the playoff bubble in Division III Region 10. In Division V, Edison is close to locking up a playoff spot but needs wins at Vermilion and at home against Huron in Week 10 to clinch a home playoff game. Port Clinton, which joins Edison in Region 18, needs a win to improve its playoff chances. The Redskins travel to Sandusky in Week 10. Huron (3-5) is No. 14 in Region 22 and needs one more win to have any chance of making the postseason. The Tigers face a tall task Friday at Perkins before visiting rival Edison in Week 10. In Division VII, Monroeville (6-2) moved up a slot to No. 4 in the Region 25 computer ratings. The Eagles finish the regular season at Crestview and home to rival St. Paul. St. Paul (4-4) is No. 9 in Region 25. The Flyers visit Mapleton on Friday. The playoffs kick off Oct. 31 with seeds 5-8 hosting first-round games. The top four seeds in each region get byes into the second round. The state championship games are scheduled for Dec. 4-6 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
