PHOTOS: Match rallies around Moon family

MILAN TWP. — Two volleyball teams and plenty of community members united around a single cause on Saturday, providing a major assist to honor and memorialize a beloved late local woman. Those representing Edison and St. Paul came together for a fundraiser known as Spike Out Epilepsy. It occurred at Edison High School. Organized by Edison High School's senior volleyball players — Kourtney Balde, Ella Booth, Stella Brown, Paige McFadden, Taylor Moore, Dana Preston and Peyton Taylor — and their mothers, the event paid tribute to Kami Moon. It also recognized her immediate family members, who attended the match. Players, parents and family members also rallied around Kami's immediate family members, who attended the match. Many attendees also wore special purple T-shirts, reading "Kami's light, our fight." Purple represents the international color for epilepsy. In memory Kami, a 1996 Edison High School graduate, passed away earlier this year. She was 47. During her later years in life, Kami was diagnosed with epilepsy, a brain condition that causes recurring seizures. Kami — who remained positive and uplifted others, despite facing much adversity in her own life — was well-known for her warm, familiar voice on WLKR and K96, using her platform to champion numerous causes. She: • Supported breast cancer survivors through events, like Girls Night Out • Honored veterans, including with the Maxton W. Soviak Memorial Foundation's Tango Trot in Berlin Heights • Promoted student-athletes, especially those representing Edison High School at the Milan Melon Festival and Night at the Races Her dedication to others left a lasting impact on the community she loved. The seven Edison seniors grew up listening to Kami on the radio and believed this event served as a good opportunity to give back in her name. Appreciations abound To ease the burden of those dealing with a diagnosis of epilepsy, Edison's volleyball players and their parents decided to donate every single cent raised on Saturday toward Epilepsy of Ohio. The money will help a local family facing this condition in one way or another. In the end, Spike Out Epilepsy raised about $5,000 through a: • Bake sale • 50/50 raffle • Basket raffle with several businesses and local organizations donating prizes Additionally, WLKR-FM, 95.3 — Kami's longtime employer — aired its "Locker Room Show" before the varsity match and K96-FM, 96.1, put together a broadcast for the varsity volleyball match. "We were happy to support an important cause for a family that means a lot to many people in the Edison community," said Kelly Booth, one of the event's coordinators. She's also the mother of Ella Booth. "Kami was a special person, and an event like this helps to keep her legacy alive." Many people expressed their thankfulness toward everyone who helped organize Saturday's event. This would include Kami's sister, Kelly Vetter. "It's great to be a part of such a close community that honors the people who live here," Vetter said. "We appreciate all of the work that went into this to honor my sister and to raise money for a great cause that impacted our family. She always loved a good party, my sister, and she would have definitely enjoyed this." During the volleyball match, every player on Edison's team presented flowers to Kami's parents, Linda and Kelly Moon, who are Berlin Heights residents. Linda addressed the entire crowd with her remarks. "We are really grateful for all of the support," said Linda, who received a thunderous ovation following her remarks.
