SATURDAY ROUNDUP: Huron volleyball sweeps D-III power Bishop Hartley

HURON — Mya Smith lined 15 kills to lead Huron to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 win over Columbus Bishop Hartley on Saturday. The Tigers finished the regular-season with a record of 17-5. Reece Hotz tallied 33 assists for Huron while Adelyn Van Sickle recorded 15 digs. Jenna Cox had 14 digs, Maggie Orzech picked up eight digs and Jada Foster registered eight kills and four blocks. Bishop Hartley (14-8) received votes in the final Division III poll of the season. Huron received votes in Division V. Monroeville 3, Carey 0 MONROEVILLE — The Division VII No. 5 Eagles defeated Carey 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 in non-league action. Ady Adams finished with 12 kills for Monroeville (20-2) while Madi Reiber had 10 kills. Alexa Adams contributed 10 digs, six kills and three aces while Addison Homan led the defense with 20 digs. Addison Lyons tallied 15 assists and Kaci Poths registered 14 assists for the Eagles. St. Paul 3, Edison 0 MILAN TWP. — The Flyers closed out the regular season with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-13 non-league victory over Edison. Shealyn Deeter and Brooklyn Cassidy each finished with 10 kills for St. Paul (16-6). The Flyers also got eight kills from Ella Kalizewski and six from Kegney Stoll. Annie Friend tallied 30 assists and two aces. Bella Guerra had 17 digs and three aces for St. Paul. Stella Brown and Taylor Moore each recorded 12 digs for Edison (9-13) while Peyton Bissell tallied 10 assists. Paige McFadden contributed eight assists, Dana Preston smacked seven kills and Abby Cloud finished with six kills. Jackson 3, Norwalk 0 NORWALK — The Truckers were competitive, but Division I Massillon Jackson came up with a 25-22, 27-25, 25-15 non-league win. Sydney Moehlman finished with nine kills for Norwalk (10-12) while Bella Hernandez had five and Maddie Gamble added four. Emily Tyler had 22 assists and eight digs while Sawyer Wineman had 26 digs. Reagan Mooney tallied three aces and Lola Schlotterer had 15 digs and served three aces. TENNIS Zgodzinski, Weit finish 2nd PORT CLINTON — Port Clinton senior Megan Zgodzinski and sophomore Shantha Weit went 1-1 on the final day of the Division II district tournament at Port Clinton High School. Zgodzinski and Weit topped Ottawa Hills juniors Olivia Stumbo and Lorena Guardia 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (2) in the district semifinals. In the final, Maumee Valley Country Day's Mari Shannon and Sofia Avram defeated Zgodzinski and Weit 6-1, 6-1. "I'm proud of the girls for finding a way to grind out a win to guarantee themselves a top-2 seed at state," PC coach Joe Miller said. "In the finals, we just ran out of gas and also ran into a buzzsaw." Zgodzinski and Weit will head to the state tournament that begins Thursday as a No. 2 seed. BOYS SOCCER Port Clinton 3, Genoa 3 PORT CLINTON — Casey Brand scored two goals and Wyatt Brand added one goal as the Redskins tied Genoa in the regular-season finale. Lincoln Beasley and Brody Schierberg each added assists for Port Clinton (8-6-2), which faces Upper Sandusky in a tournament opener Thursday. Perkins 2, Lexington 2 PERKINS TWP. — The Pirates wrapped up the regular season with a tie against a tough Lexington team. Titus Normington-Slay and Kaden Camp each scored for Perkins (14-0-3). Steele 7, Vermilion 1 AMHERST — The Sailors dropped to 9-8 overall with the non-league road loss to Amherst Steele. GIRLS SOCCER Perkins 3, Ashland Crestview 0 PERKINS TWP. — The Pirates improved to 14-2-1 overall with the non-league win over Crestview. Norwalk 9, Mansfield Senior 0 NORWALK — Claire Spettle pumped in five goals to lead the Truckers to the non-league victory. Xavi Immel had two goals and one assist, Audrey Sanders had one goal and one assist and CJ Bennett added a goal for Norwalk (12-3-2). Clyde 15, Toledo Scott 0 CLYDE — The Fliers led 8-0 at halftime and cruised to a non-league victory at Robert Bishop Stadium. Clyde improves to 6-9-2, tying the school record for wins in a season. Mimi Greenslade scored five goals and added three assists for the Fliers. Genoa 10, Port Clinton 0 PORT CLINTON — Abigail Johnson made six saves in goal for the Redskins in the non-league loss. Port Clinton (7-8-1) faces Rossford in a tournament opener Monday. CROSS COUNTRY St. Paul girls 2nd at FC NEW LONDON — St. Paul junior Kate Ware finished seventh overall in a time of 21 minutes, 25 seconds, leading the Flyers to a second-place finish at the Firelands Conference meet. New London's Valery Henry won the race, crossing the line in 20:09. Crestview won the team title with 30 points while St. Paul scored 45 points. Monroeville competed, but did not score as a team. Jenny Schwan was 10th for St. Paul in 22:09 while teammate Deanna Vasquez was right behind in 11th in a time of 22:12. Also for the Flyers, Frances Donnelly was 13th in 22:56 and Anna Wright took 14th in 23:15. Freshman Kenley Schaefer finished eighth for Monroeville in a time of 21:46. Crestview also won the boys championship with 37 points. Isaac McFarland won the individual title for Crestview in 16:44. St. Paul was sixth with 149 points while Monroeville again did not score as a team. Jacob Collins led the Flyers with a 19th-place finish in 19:12 while Tanner Denman took 27th in 20:21. Paul Demarco topped Monroeville by finishing 34th in 21:28. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Bunts leads Tiffin in rushing TIFFIN — Perkins graduate Isaac Bunts, a freshman running back at Tiffin University, led the Dragons in rushing in their 54-7 win over Walsh at Frost-Kalnow Stadium. Bunts finished with 14 carries for 35 yards, his first action of the season. Tiffin improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.
