FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Clyde handles Sandusky, stays in playoff position

CLYDE — Adam Young ran for four touchdowns to lead Clyde to a 40-7 win over Sandusky last Friday. Young scored on runs covering 4, 2, 2 and 12 yards and finished with 75 yards on 15 carries. The Fliers improved to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division. Clyde stayed at No. 12 in the Division IV Region 14 computer ratings. The top 12 teams in each region qualify for the playoffs. Clyde outgained Sandusky 314-190 and limited the Blue Streaks (1-7, 0-3) to 49 yards rushing. Clyde quarterback Jonathan Lantz completed 14 of 16 passes for 188 yards with a touchdown and interception. Mason Flewelling caught four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown as six Fliers caught passes. Sandusky's Dale Johnson threw for 141 yards and one touchdown — a 21-yard strike to Terrell Ruiz that tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter. Ruiz caught four passes for 81 yards. Sandusky travels to Norwalk (3-5, 0-2) on Friday while Clyde hits the road to face Columbian (4-4, 2-0). Landon Leis tossed a four-yard touchdown pass and scored on an eight-yard run. Down 17-14, Port Clinton (5-3, 2-1 Bay) went ahead on a six-yard score from Malakaii Pinkelton. Edison (5-3, 1-1) jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Cole Leimeister and 39-yard strike from Leimeister to Andy Strecker. The Chargers travel to Vermilion (5-3, 1-1) on Friday while Port Clinton hosts Bellevue (5-3, 1-1). SMCC 32, Cardinal Stritch 8 SANDUSKY — St. Mary Central Catholic scored all of its points in a dominant first quarter and defeated Cardinal Stritch 32-8 in non-league game between two Northern 8 Conference teams. Cayden Wikel returned the opening kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown to get the Panthers (7-1, 5-1 N8) rolling. SMCC's Bryan Gibson recovered a Stritch fumble on the kickoff and scored on a 23-yard run to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Gibson scored two more touchdowns, including a 12-yard score set up by a Crew Trumpower blocked punt. SMCC hosts Morenci (Mich.) on Saturday. They can clinch at least a share with a win over the Cougars. Against Plymouth, the Eagles scored four times in the second quarter to break the game open against the Big Red (1-7, 1-4). Connor Bores ran eight times for 140 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles, who rushed for 402 yards. Carter Roeder added 88 yards on six attempts and Teddy Ballard had 81 yards on five rushes.
