PREP ROUNDUP: Perkins, Norwalk girls finish tied for 2nd in SBC

NORWALK — Perkins' Hayley Henning scored a late goal to push Perkins into a 2-2 draw with Norwalk in a girls soccer match Wednesday between two of the top teams in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Henning scored off a corner kick by Isa Ramirez with 2:39 left in the match at Contractors Stadium. "Hayley was just active and got to it," Perkins coach Scott McVeigh said. "It bounced around a little bit and Hailey put it in a perfect spot where the goalkeeper couldn't get to it." The Pirates are 13-2-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the SBC, tying Norwalk (11-3-2, 9-1-1) for second place behind undefeated league champion Woodmore (15-1-1, 11-0). "This is typically for the league championship," McVeigh said. "Not this year, but it's a great game to play late to get us a tournament atmosphere. Give our girls credit, give their girls credit. It's always a great game." Norwalk took an early 1-0 lead when Claire Spettle converted a penalty kick. Just 49 seconds into the second half, Ramirez scored for Perkins to tie the match at 1-1. Spettle scored again at the 37:49 mark and Norwalk led 2-1 for the next 35 minutes. "Typical Norwalk-Perkins," McVeigh said. "I give our girls credit for sticking in there and playing a full 80 minutes. It took almost 78 (minutes) to tie them. They kept fighting. "The last six games we've been 2-2-2 against them. Now it's 2-2-3. They're good and obviously Spettle is special." Norwalk joined the SBC prior to the 2017 season and has gone 70-3-4 in league matches. Six of the seven losses or ties came against Perkins. The Truckers finish the regular season at home Saturday against Mansfield Senior. Norwalk's tournament opener is next Wednesday at home against Shelby. The Pirates host Crestview in their regular season finale Saturday. Perkins opens tournament play next Wednesday at home against Toledo Central Catholic. Huron 7, Sandusky 0 HURON — Kate Gilbert scored three goals and Ava Manner added two as the Tigers rolled to the Sandusky Bay Conference win. Sofia Zendejas scored her first varsity goal for Huron (7-7-1, 7-3-1 SBC). Kate Ryan also scored for the Tigers. Lillian Thompson tallied an assist, tying the single-season school record with 11. Sandusky dropped to 2-15, 1-9. Edison 5, Vermilion 2 VERMILION — The Chargers led 3-1 at halftime and cruised in the second half to the Sandusky Bay Conference road win. Joy Jordan scored twice for Edison (5-10-2, 5-5-1 SBC) while Sophie Baker, Kailyn Dickman and Kellyn Ritchie each scoring once. Ella Rogers made six saves in goal for the Chargers. BOYS SOCCER Huron 1, Sandusky 0 HURON — Peter Cencer scored the lone goal, lifting the Tigers to the Sandusky Bay Conference victory. Huron improved to 4-11 overall and 4-7 in league play. Sandusky fell to 1-13-1, 1-8-1. VOLLEYBALL St. Paul 3, Old Fort 0 OLD FORT — The Flyers topped Division VII No. 8 Old Fort 25-16, 25-15, 26-24 in non-league action. St. Paul (14-6) trailed 8-0 in the third set before rallying. Brooklyn Cassidy finished with 11 kills and 10 digs for St. Paul while Ella Kalizewski had 10 kills and four blocks. Shealyn Deeter added nine kills. Setter Annie Friend had 28 assists, but also added five blocks at the net and had eight digs. Also for St. Paul, Lily Cuturic (three aces) had 24 digs. St. Paul visits New London on Thursday and Edison on Saturday to close out the regular season.
