Work impacts access to Huron pier

HURON — In recent days, crews began working on Huron's North Main Pier, also known as the lighthouse pier. Because of this, there's a temporary closure in effect: from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. It should remain cordoned off during this time frame through most of October. Between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., when crews aren't working, the public can access the pier. "This closure is due to mechanical issues with the barge crane on the river and crews having to work overhead of the pier from the shoreline," according to a Huron government statement issued on Monday. "Ryba Marine Construction Co., the onsite contractor, is diligently working to complete the project in a timely manner," it read. "Weather, both wind and wave activity, plays a significant role in the construction progress." The project involves: • Improving pier safety • Enhancing long-term structural integrity • Ensuring continued public access and enjoyment for years to come "The construction progress will be continually reassessed, and the pier will be open again when safety permits," the statement read. "We understand the lighthouse pier is one of Huron's most popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts, such as walkers, birders and" anglers, interim city manager Stu Hamilton said. "These repairs are essential to maintaining safety, and we appreciate the community's patience and understanding during the temporary closure."
