FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: SMCC picks up N8 win over Chalker

SOUTHINGTON — Bryan Gibson ran for four touchdowns as St. Mary Central Catholic picked up a much-needed Northern 8 Conference road win over Chalker on Saturday. After losing last week to Fremont St. Joseph, the Panthers (6-1, 5-1 N8) kept themselves atop the league standings with three weeks to play. Gibson opened the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown, but the extra point was missed. He added a 48-yard score later and a two-point conversion pass from Cullen Dillard to Josh Will pushed the lead to 14-0 in the second quarter. Chalker (5-1, 3-1) responded as Colton Levensky scored on a 69-yard pass from Vince Delvecchio. The duo added the two-point conversion pass to cut the SMCC lead to 14-8. Levensky and Delvecchio hooked up again later, this time a 90-yard strike. The two-point pass from Delvecchio to Levensky gave Chalker a 16-14 advantage at halftime. Needing a rally, the Panthers did it in the third quarter behind Gibson. He had a 29-yard rushing touchdown and later scored from a yard out. Dillard hit Trace Smith for the two-point conversion for a 28-14 lead. SMCC fended off Chalker in the fourth quarter. Delvecchio scored on a 17-yard run and added the conversion, but the Panthers did enough for the win. SMCC hosts Cardinal Stritch (0-7, 0-6) on Friday, a team it beat 43-0 to open the season Aug. 22. The Eagles improved to 5-2 overall and stayed tied atop the FC standings at 4-0 with Ashland Crestview (5-2, 4-0). "I probably say it every week, and you could probably put me on repeat, but that's a testament to our captains or the seniors in our leadership," Monroeville coach Tylor Nester said. "Our guys have to stay focused, stay hungry, and continue to prepare each week like it's the Firelands Conference championship game." The Eagles offense wasted no time to score, with just one offensive snap to start the game. Cooper Cleary had a 71-yard burst into the end zone on the first offensive play for the Eagles to put them up 7-0 after the first of eight Isaac Krueger kicks in just under two minutes. Colt Clark finished the game 7 for 8 for 178 yards through the air and ran for 50 yards. Cleary led the running game with just two carries, both on scoring plays, for 91 yards. Nester was happy to get the big win in front of the community after the official completion of the Marsh Field renovations. "We've talked about it continuously, but you can't say it enough, right?" he said. "The commitment to the community, to continue to just support the schools and the kids, is unbelievable."
