Father-son duo sentenced for sex crimes

NEW LONDON — A father and son duo convicted of sex crimes recently learned their fates. Kevin S. Black, Sr., 48, of the third block of Shadyside Ave., was sentenced on Sept. 18 after he previously pleaded guilty to one count of importuning, a fifth-degree felony, and one amended count of gross sexual imposition, also a fifth-degree felony. Senior Huron County Common Pleas Court Judge James Conway handed Senior nine-month sentences for each charge and ordered them to be served consecutively for a total of a year and a half in prison, according to court records. He received two days of jail time credit toward the prison sentence. Senior will face a mandatory five years of post-release control. If he violates that control, he could be sent back to prison for up to half of the original sentence. He was labeled a Tier One sex offender, meaning he must register his home and work addresses with the local sheriff annually for fifteen years. In exchange for his guilty plea, the state dropped two misdemeanor counts of sexual imposition. The gross sexual imposition charge was originally indicted as a third-degree felony. Junior Kevin S. Black, Jr., 29, of the third block of Shadyside Ave., was sentenced on Wednesday. He previously pleaded guilty to one count of attempted rape, a second-degree felony and three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, all three of which are third-degree felonies. For attempted rape, Conway sentenced Junior to six to nine years in prison. For each of the unlawful conduct charges, Junior received two-year sentences. Conway then ordered all sentences to be served concurrently for a total of six to nine years in prison, according to court documents. Junior was given about 10 months of jail-time credit. Junior was labeled a Tier three sex offender, meaning he must register his home and work addresses with the local sheriff every 90 days for life. He will also be required to live more than 1,000 feet from a school, preschool or daycare facility. He will have a mandatory five years of post-release control. If he violates that control, he could be sent back to prison for up to half of the original sentence. Both Both Blacks are responsible for a total of $160 in restitution. As felons, neither Black will be allowed to possess firearms once released from prison. The crimes Junior was accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with a girl between the ages of 14 and 15 from March 2024 through November. The first instance of the two having sex was March 9, 2024, according to a New London police incident report. The girl told police she was hanging out with Junior and one of his friends when she told him she was upset about a boy rejecting her. All three consumed alcohol, the girl told police. After Junior walked her home from his house, he reportedly raped her. Junior purportedly continued to have sex with the girl until November, when his father caught them in the act. Senior then spoke at length with the girl and had her sit on his lap during the conversation. She alleged Senior told her he would also have to assault her to keep the secret of her and Junior having sex from her father. The girl told police that when she was younger, she and Senior engaged in what he called the "pants game," where they would chase each other and pull down one another's pants. After the initial conversation with police, an officer arranged for the girl to undergo a sexual assault nurse examiner exam for evidence of sexual assault. Investigators then arranged for the girl's father to talk to the Blacks about the incidents while the father wore a wire. The father went to the Blacks' home, according to the report, and talked with them about the girl's accusations. Both Blacks reportedly made admissions during the conversation. Police then conferred with an assistant prosecutor who authorized charges against both Blacks.
