PREP ROUNDUP: SMCC's Finneran qualifies for state

BOWLING GREEN — St. Mary Central Catholic's Blake Finneran shot a 73 at a Division III boys golf district tournament Thursday to qualify for the state tournament. Finneran, a senior, will make the trip to state for the second straight year. He finished second among individuals at the district at Stone Ridge Golf Club with his 1-over-par round. Finneran had 12 pars, three birdies, one bogey (on the final hole) and one double bogey. He shot a 37 on the front nine and an even-par 36 on the back. Delphos St. John's Tyce McClain was medalist with a 72. He played the last eight holes 1 under. Pettisville (313) won the team title and filled one of four team state berths. Van Buren (316), St. John's (316) and Kalida (326) also will play at state Oct. 13-14 at North Star Golf Club in Sunbury. SMCC shot 356 as a team to finish 10th. Joey Finneran, a freshman, shot an 84 for the Panthers. Also scoring for SMCC were Leo Will (99) and Pravir Gorty (100). Margaretta finished 13th with a 362. Scoring for the Polar Bears were Keiygan Morris (85), Phinneus Headley (89), Gavin Berg (93) and Jaxson Bohn (95). St. Paul freshman Mason Beatty and Huron junior Grant Humphrey each shot an 86. TENNIS Arnold sets PC wins mark PORT CLINTON — Port Clinton's Grace Arnold won her 122nd career match, teaming up with Nora Pixler to go 3-0 in the opening rounds of the sectional tournament. Arnold and Pixler were one of two doubles teams from Port Clinton to advance to next week's district tournament, along with Megan Zgodzinski and Shantha Weit. Also for the Redskins, Anastasia Hughes moved on in singles. Both PC doubles teams and Hughes advance to Saturday's sectional finals, which will determine the seedings for next Wednesday's district tournament. Arnold and Pixler defeated Clyde (6-0, 6-0), Oak Harbor (6-0, 6-0) and Clyde's Delaney Fritz and Adriana Barnes-Ortmann (6-1, 6-1) to move on. Zgodzinski and Weit topped Bellevue (6-0, 6-1), Huron (6-0, 6-1) and Norwalk's Chloe Hazelwood and Riley Helton (6-2, 6-0) to advance. Hughes didn't drop a game all day. She defeated Perkins' Katelynn Troyer, Huron's Sydney Merckens and Vermilion's Alexa Guitar, each by 6-0, 6-0 scores. The Port Clinton doubles team of Lilly Hatt and Jae Mazur lost their first match to Bellevue's Natalie Littlejohn and Emerson Snyder. The Bellevue duo won 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5). St. Mary Central Catholic's Rachel Spicer advanced to the semifinals in singles. Spicer, the No. 3 seed, posted 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 wins to qualify for the district tournament. SMCC's Caitlyn Collins and Rae Roth fell in the first round in singles while the Panthers' two doubles teams (Bella Matthews and Lauren Maxwell, Grace Will and Elizabeth Farrar) also lost their openers. Sandusky bows out in Division I FREMONT — Three Sandusky doubles team and one singles player dropped their opening matches at a Division I sectional at Ross. In singles, Sandusky's Zuri Johnson lost 6-0, 6-0 to Clay's Xylah Beauregard. Tiffin Columbian's Leah Weingart was the district singles champion. In doubles, Sandusky's Chloe Goodsite and Kylie Gant lost 6-1, 6-2 to Clay's Abbey Lewis and Emily Cordell. The Streaks' Joy Redding and Dynastee Lindsey lost 6-1, 6-0 to Clay's Kaydance Sutter and Lindy Geise and Sandusky's Amya Johnson and Kambryn Ehrnsberger lost 6-0, 6-0 to Ross' Addy Calhoun and Ruby Harger. Two Ashland teams will play for the doubles championship Saturday. VOLLEYBALL Huron 3, Edison 0 MILAN TWP. — Huron swept Edison 25-18, 25-13, 25-15 to stay tied with Willard atop the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division. Mya Smith had nine kills and four blocks for the Tigers (13-5, 7-1 SBC Bay). Maggie Orzech and Addison Graham each had eight kills and Ava Trevino finished with seven. Orzech added 13 digs and Jenna Cox finished with 12. Reece Hotz totaled 37 assists and Adelyn Van Sickle was 16-16 serving. Edison dropped to 8-11, 4-4. Vermilion 3, Margaretta 1 CASTALIA — Vermilion defeated Margaretta 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 21-25 in Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division action. Sophie Habermehl and Emma Gebhardt each had 11 kills for the Sailors (7-12, 3-5 SBC Bay) while Faith Sergent had nine kills. Lauren Logsdon had 26 assists and Elyse Myntti had 13 assists and three aces. Delaney Russell had 25 digs, Elizabeth Okasinski had 16 digs, and Haley Stepp registered 14. Kenadie Saylor had nine kills, three blocks and 11 digs for Margaretta (6-13, 3-5). Renna Keller had seven kills and seven blocks and Lily Belak had eight kills and 11 digs. Lucy Edwards had four aces for the Polar Bears. SMCC 3, Northwood 0 NORTHWOOD — St. Mary Central Catholic swept Northwood 25-23, 25-18, 25-23 in Sandusky Bay Conference River Division play. Reid Didion had 14 kills and broke the SMCC school record for most kills in a season. She also had 14 digs. Finley Karr finished with 28 assists and broke the school record for most assists in a season. Khloe West added 10 kills, 15 digs and four aces for SMCC (6-14, 2-11 SBC River). Ella Brownell had 22 digs and Adri Gill added 14. Northwood dropped to 4-14, 1-12. SJCC 3, Danbury 2 DANBURY TWP. — Fremont St. Joseph outlasted Danbury in five sets of Sandusky Bay Conference River Division play, 24-26, 25-19, 17-25, 25-13, 15-12. Avrey Bowling had 14 kills for the Lakers (10-10, 6-7 SBC River). Lauren Bergman had 49 digs and Cali Wunder added 26 assists. SJCC improved to 17-3, 11-3. GIRLS SOCCER Norwalk 6, Clyde 0 NORWALK — Claire Spettle scored four goals and had an assist to lead Norwalk to a Sandusky Bay Conference shutout of Clyde. CJ Bennett added two goals and Xavi Immel had three assists.
