Short film on inclusion debuts

SANDUSKY — A short film promoting inclusion recently debuted. The project, "Disabilities: Through an Authentic Lens," was developed by two friends: Erica Harris, owner of TEAMS Advance, and Lisa Cassel, a licensed nurse and owner of Cassel Care. A premiere party took place last month. Community members, film participants, families, friends and representatives from local businesses united to show support and celebrate the project. The event was a success, Cassel said. "So many people followed our journey as we filmed and became invested in seeing the final product," Harris said. "To finally be able to show both versions of the film and hear everyone's responses has been amazing." Cassel added: "The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we've been deeply moved by the reactions. I don't think either of us fully anticipated the profound impact the film would have on those who took part in its creation." Harris and Cassel share a passion for building inclusive communities. They want people to understand that those with disabilities are contributing members of society. "The participants aren't just subjects of the film. They're collaborators who helped shape the project from its inception," Cassel said. "They courageously opened their lives to the cameras, allowing intimate access to their daily experiences to help educate the public about disability perspectives." The video highlights how people with disabilities can do what everyone else can. Some examples include voting, raising a family, attending college, participating in community events, playing sports and more. "We encourage people to watch this film with an open mind. It has the potential to challenge assumptions, shift perspectives and spark more inclusive ways of thinking," Harris said. The duo plans to use the film as an educational tool that fosters meaningful dialogue and drives the kind of change necessary to advance disability inclusion. Harris and Cassel hope viewers come away from these films feeling uplifted and reflective — motivated to apply what they've seen and make a meaningful difference moving forward.
