PREP ROUNDUP: Margaretta's Schaefer qualifies for state

FINDLAY — Margaretta's Ellyse Schaefer qualified for the Division II girls state golf tournament with a strong showing at Monday's district tournament. Schaefer, a senior, shot an 82 at Sycamore Springs Golf Course to fill one of four state spots reserved for girls not on a qualifying team. "I was not surprised with how she played," Margaretta coach Chris Smith said. "The longer the season went, the more consistent she's been." Schaeffer carded a timely birdie on the par-4 16th hole before closing with two bogeys to finish 10 over par. She shot 41 on the front nine and 41 on the back to finish fifth out of nearly 90 golfers. Her round included one birdie, seven pars, seven bogeys and two double bogeys on the front nine. The birdie on 16 calmed some nerves as the competition for individual state berths tightened. "I was thinking I needed to par out (the last three holes)," Schaefer said. "Normally I never get any birdies, but I hit my second shot to a half a foot and had a tap-in birdie." She hit a pitching wedge from 110 yards before tapping in. That took some pressure off Schaefer, who found the water twice on the back nine. On one hole, she saved par after a big drive got wet. "That was a good hole," she said. "I was able to breath a little bit." Schaefer said she was good off the tee and putted well on some tough greens. "I think I only three-putted on one hole and got up and down on a lot of holes," she said. "I was getting in some trouble and making things more difficult for myself." Schaeffer shot a 95 at the district tournament last year, meaning she improved by 13 strokes. Edison junior Annabelle Seville missed out on a playoff for the last individual spot by one stroke. Seville shot an 84, finishing birdie-bogey-bogey. She finished ninth overall while matching the score she shot last year (84) that got her to state. The Chargers finished 12th as a team with a 416. Leah Sharp shot a 107, Averi Wolf finished with a 108 and Ella Rogers carded a 117. Mansfield St. Peter's Joy Kim was medalist with a 73. Fremont St. Joseph's Ryan Dickman also qualified for state with a 77 — the second-best score on the day. Huron's Ashtyn Spooner shot a 94. Archbold was the team champion with a 369, edging Wynford by four strokes. Wauseon and Van Buren also advanced. The Division II state tournament is scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday at Heatherwood Golf Club in the Dayton suburb of Springboro. BOYS SOCCER Port Clinton 5, Columbian 2 PORT CLINTON — Port Clinton improved to 6-5-1 with a 5-2 Sandusky Bay Conference win against Columbian. Adam Fitt and Casey Brand each had a goal and assist for the Redskins (5-3-1 SBC). Aero Wymer, Brennen Mares and Wyatt Brand each added one goal. Old Fort 2, Huron 0 OLD FORT — Huron was shut out by Old Fort, dropping to 3-9 overall and 3-5 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Norwalk 4, Northwood 0 NORWALK — Elliot Gahring scored two goals to lead the Truckers to a Sandusky Bay Conference victory over Northwood. Noah Jameson and Aiden Khan each scored for Norwalk (7-5, 6-1 SBC). Landon Ferkel tallied two assists for the Truckers, who led 2-0 at halftime. GIRLS SOCCER Bellevue 3, Sandusky 0 SANDUSKY — Bellevue shut out Sandusky in Sandusky Bay Conference play, getting goals from Lyla Young, Lilly Sosa and Campbell Good. Bellevue improved to 5-8-1 overall and 4-5 in SBC action. Sandusky (2-12) honored seven seniors on Senior Night: Ka'Mari Flemming, Cora Rogers, Makayla Popke, Izzy Sartor, Savannah Palmer, Addison Johnson and Jakiya Johnson. Perkins 1, Edison 0 MILAN TWP. — Perkins shut out Edison 1-0 to improve to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Jordyn Brunner scored the game's only goal. Ella Rogers made 11 saves in goal for the Chargers (3-8-2, 3-4-1). Port Clinton 4, Columbian 3 PORT CLINTON — Gabbie Heilmann scored two goals and had an assist to help Port Clinton edge Columbian in Sandusky Bay Conference play. Audrey Rohrer added a goal and assist and Summer Lopresto and Joey Crannick each added an assist for the Redskins (5-6-1, 4-4-1 SBC). Abigail Johnson had 16 saves in goal. Norwalk 10, Northwood 0 NORWALK — Ten different Norwalk players scored as the Truckers improved to 10-2-1 overall and 8-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
