Crash injures 2, county vehicle involved

DANBURY TWP. — Two people were injured as a result of a traffic crash involving an Ottawa County-owned vehicle recently. Just after 8 a.m. on Sept. 9, a 49-year-old Port Clinton man was operating a Ram Promaster 3500 cargo van westbound on East Bayshore Lane in Danbury Township. The van is registered to the Ottawa County commissioners, according to a crash report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. At the same time, an 83-year-old Lakeside-Marblehead man was eastbound on Bayshore in a Ford pickup truck. The van driver allegedly attempted to turn left onto South Englebeck Road and struck the truck, the report states. The truck traveled off-road to the right, struck a street sign, overturned and then struck a fire hydrant before coming to a rest. The van's driver was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. He was cited for failure to yield from a left turn. Both the truck's driver and his 81-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries. They were both wearing their seatbelts. The man was taken by ground ambulance to Firelands Health in Sandusky. He has since been released. The passenger was flown by medical helicopter to St. Vincent's in Toledo. Her current condition is unknown. Messages left with Ottawa County commissioners Donald Douglas, Mark Coppeler and Mark Stahl were not returned as of late Wednesday.
