Kappas driven to see North Coast succeed

MIDDLE BASS ISLAND — Those who own certain cars belonging to a group — specifically, the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, often calling themselves the Kappas — recently met up with their vehicles on Middle Bass Island near the historic Lonz Winery property. "Kappa refers to the common platform used on both vehicles," main organizer William Biddlecombe said. Since the introduction of the Solstice in 2006 and Sky in 2007, enthusiast owners have gathered for national and regional events. "That's one reason I've been such an enthusiast for these cars," Biddlecombe said. "They're a very active group. These cars are made to be driven". In Ohio, there are Kappa Clubs in the Toledo and Cleveland regions, however, neither group had an event in the shores and islands region. "In 2013, I had talked to a couple of my friends who lived close, and we decided to meet on Put-In-Bay in September," said Biddlecombe, who also serves as a Huron city councilman and a main organizer for Huron River Fest. "That's how it all began." Since then, those belonging to this vehicle fraternity have had cars join them from every state surrounding Ohio and a few even beyond. "It's really become a destination trip for anyone with a Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky," Biddlecombe said. "People are coming from all over and helping to boost our local economy," he added. "We've had as many as 14 cars depending on the year and weather". This year, Biddlecombe noted how the weather was perfect, and the group spent the day on Middle Bass Island enjoying what the island has to offer. "I really appreciate how accommodating the Miller Ferry has been to us throughout the years. They really make scheduling a group of cars easy for us", commented Biddlecombe. Biddlecombe has already started discussing next year's trip.
