Class of 65' thrives

SANDUSKY — Members representing Sandusky High School's Class of 1965 recently celebrated their 60-year reunion with the "last big bash." The graduates came together for three days of activities, celebrating the class that, in 1965, was the largest graduating class in the district's history. According to the class's records, there were 447 graduates in 1965. Today, they stand as the third largest class to have gone through Sandusky Schools. The class's senior quote was "Nothing great is ever achieved without enthusiasm." "This past weekend, classmates celebrated with great spirit and enthusiasm," according to a class statement. "The important thing to realize, though, is that this celebration was not about what people did or didn't do in high school or about the size of their house or their paycheck. It was about growing up in Sandusky, our shared values and the journey we've traveled since graduation." Class members credited the school district and Sandusky itself as their "roots." These reunions help the former students stay connected with new friendships, new opportunities and give an appreciation for where they grew up. "The older one gets, the more you realize that these classmates are the ones who really 'get you,'" the statement said. "As we like to say, we are the... wooden spoon, lead paint, no car seat, no bike helmet, garden hose drinking survivor and proud of it." Celebrate the 'Good Ole Days' The reunion's theme was a train making three stops. • Stop No. 1 — the Merry-Go-Round Museum At the museum, former students celebrated the "good old days." The class reminisced with Merry-Go-Round rides and a walk through the Cedar Point section of the museum. • Stop No. 2 — The Sandusky Yacht Club The class enjoyed music and activities that were popular through the decades, dating back to the 1940s, the decade in which they were born. Throughout the night, the former students danced with glow sticks and sang along to top songs, including "It's Now or Never", "I've had the Time of my Life" and "Happy Trails." • Stop No. 3 — Shoreline Park Students gathered at their last stop for an honor and remembrance event. They showed respect for the 153 students who died while spreading the school's colors into the Sandusky Bay. Vietnam veterans were also honored at the event, with special highlights given to former classmates Charles Greene, Robert Reynolds and Alan Stein. The class placed a wreath at Sandusky's War Memorial for Vietnam Veterans.
