Districts' annual grades released

Students are not the only ones whose performance is put under review. Every year, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce grades K-12 school districts' performance by measuring several categories. Much of the scoring is based on students' state testing results and is done on a five-star system: One star is the lowest, and five stars is the highest ranking a district can receive. The 2024-25 district report cards show the majority of local school districts' overall grades stayed the same when compared to the 2023-24 school year, with some scores improving or regressing by one star or half a star. Defining the results The state department assigns overall rankings to school districts based on a weighted average of rankings in the following categories: • Achievement: It represents whether students' performance on state tests have met established thresholds and how students performed overall on tests. • Progress: It tracks the growth of all students based on their past test performances. • Gap closing: It shows how well schools are meeting the performance expectations for students in English language arts, math and graduation. It also measures how schools are doing in supporting English learners to increase language proficiency, reducing chronic absenteeism for all students and identifying gifted students and providing gifted services. • Graduation: It measures of the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate and the five-year adjusted cohort graduation rate. • Early literacy: It measures of reading improvement and proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade. In the 2024-25 school year, the school districts of Margaretta and Fremont both improved by half a star. Meanwhile, Perkins, Vermilion, New London, Bellevue and Put-In-Bay all decreased by half a star. Report card results Here is how area school districts ranked. The community school is measured using a different scoring system than the traditional districts. Instead, the state uses a Dropout Recovery Program Report Card. Ryan Bohn, tbe school's superintendent/principal, said the most recent data reflects the 2023-24 school year, and this is the fourth year in a row his school has earned an "exceeds standards" rating. Townsend Community School provides a blended learning educational model for students residing in Erie, Huron, Lorain, Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca Counties. Founded in 2011, the school is overseen by its sponsor, Margaretta Schools, and specializes in dropout prevention and credit recovery for students in grades 9-12 for those between the ages of 14 and 21.
