Bellevue boys golf wins SBC Lake

HURON — The final piece of the puzzle. Bellevue entered Wednesday's Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division tournament at Thunderbird Hills Golf Course having won all six shootouts this season. The Redmen finished the deal, claiming the tournament with a team score of 322, and the overall league championship this season. "We're thrilled to win the SBC title today," Bellevue coach Luke Spurlock said. "We won all six of the shootouts and won today, so it was pretty dominating. We do think we could have been 10 strokes better. We did that last Saturday at the Norwalk Invitational." Bellevue's league title is the first since 2014 when the Redmen were members of the Northern Ohio League. Bellevue scored the maximum points for the season with 40 points. The league tournament counts double toward the season standings. Perkins was second Wednesday with a 329 while Clyde was third with a score of 340. Columbian (356) took fourth and Norwalk (358) was fifth. Sandusky did not score as a team. Blake Sutherland paced the Redmen with a 79. "Blake had a great day," Spurlock said. "He was pretty grumpy about the round he had the day before at Mills Creek, but he took care of business today. It was a nice, well put together round." Jackson Decker and Max Horn each shot an 80 and Samuel Cooper rounded out the team scoring with an 83. Also shooting for the Redmen was Caden Lindsey with an 84 and Preston Spurlock, who carded an 89. "The consistency was awesome," coach Spurlock said. "We talk about having a safety net with all of our guys. If someone isn't having their best day, we know we can still win. Our depth is amazing." The Pirates took second overall in the season standings with 29 points. "I think our guys played their tails off to get in a position to possibly catch Bellevue, but kind of faltered at the end," Perkins coach Tim Zapadka said. "Props to Bellevue for being so consistent all season." Colton Kelley and Ty Obergefell tied for sixth overall with an 81. Kyle Schaefer was right behind them with an 82 and Josh Cummings fired an 85. "Our top guys have been leaned on all season," Zapadka said. "Today was no different. Proud of all my dudes for their efforts." Perkins is back in action Friday at the Erie County Championships at Plum Brook. "Right now, we are in a good position to play well at sectionals and hopefully get out to districts if we play well," Zapadka said. Clyde finished fourth overall this season. Nico Carroll led the Fliers with a 79 on Wednesday while Adler Renfro shot an 85 and Mitch Newsome an 86. Jarrett Scheid led Norwalk with an 86 while Cohen Shoop tallied an 89. With Wednesday's tournament win, Perkins has taken the lead in the season-long standings with 25 points, ahead of Clyde's 24 points. The league wraps up Thursday with a SBC Lake shootout at Mills Creek. "I feel like we're peaking at the right time," Perkins coach Tim Belden said. "That's the third in a row we've won and now we get a chance to finish it off tomorrow then turn our focus to sectionals on Monday. Should be a fun day." Perkins won with a team score of 384 while the Fliers (398) were second. Norwalk (402) took third, Columbian was fourth (403) and Bellevue (412) was fifth. Pirates junior Ireland Hart was individual medalist with a round of 86. Clyde's Samantha Young was second with a 93. "Ireland has now been medalist at every shootout and now the tournament and has been very consistent," Belden said. "She struggled on the back 9 a little today, but her bad rounds this year were good rounds last year so she's been huge for us." Aubrey Ransom was tied for fourth overall with a 95 while Lucy Miller shot a 101. Maycee Bohn added a 102 to round out the scoring for the Pirates. "Aubrey Ransom was absolutely huge today," Belden said. "She's my softball player turned golfer and absolutely mashes it off the tee. Her short game continues to improve and that's why she set a new PR today and was a big reason we won. Ireland, Maycee and Lucy all had their ups and downs, but kept it together and turned in solid scores." Sienna Turner tied Ransom's 95 for fourth for Clyde. "Sam and Sienna carried the team," Fliers coach Jerry Phillips said. "They've played well for us all season long." Clyde's Claire Collins finished 10th with a 99 while Adalynn Siedenburg tallied a 111. "I'm happy overall with our performance this season," Phillips said. "We look to finish the season strong with our final league match tomorrow. The girls should feel confident in themselves going into postseason play as well."
