PREP ROUNDUP: Huron cross country sweeps Galion invite

GALION — Sage Edgerly-Bork won the Tiger Division boys race, leading Huron to the boys cross country championship at the Galion Invitational on Saturday. The Tigers finished with 66 points, six points ahead of Old Fort's 72. Danbury competed, but didn't score as a team. Edgerly-Bork crossed the line in a time of 16 minutes, 10 seconds, less than a full second better than Ridgedale's Brogan Weston. Jason Nims took fifth for Huron, finishing in 17:07. Achilles Figueroa was seventh in 17:25. Jackson Lee was the top finisher for the Lakers, taking 39th in 20:18. On the girls side, Rylie Towns took the victory in a time of 18:58 to lead Huron to the team title with 29 points. Galion Northmor was second with 47. Claire Putnam took fourth for the Tigers in 20:21 while Andrea Lesnak was sixth (20:30) and Laney Schlessman took seventh (20:39). Ellie Colon was the lone Danbury runner, taking 16th in 22:30. Perkins' Joel Smelcer won the Stripes Division boys race, clocking in at 15:44. The Pirates took fourth as a team with 99 points. Medina Highland won with 34. Bellevue (133) was sixth, Clyde (212) was seventh and Sandusky (260) was ninth. Port Clinton didn't score as a team. Port Clinton's Charlie Simpson took eighth in 17:23. Brock Meacham from Bellevue was 12th in 17:51 while teammate Elias Sponseller was 14th in 18:05. PC's Morgan Wiechman won the Stripes Division girls race in a time of 18:39. Bellevue's Reece Meacham was sixth in 19:54 while Kameron Koch from Bellevue took 15th in 21:34. Medina Highland took the team title with 40 points while Bellevue was fifth with 118 points and Clyde eighth with 158 points. Lillie Price topped Perkins with a 20th-place finish in a time of 21:59. In the Roar Division girls race, St. Paul's Kate Ware took fifth in a time of 21:40. Zang 2nd at Genoa GENOA — Margaretta sophomore Cole Zang took second at The Battle of Turtle Creek Genoa Invitational. Zang finished in a time of 16:18. Teammates A.J. Walters was seventh in 17:17 while Kyle Walton finished 14th in 18:15. Genoa won the team title with 63 points. The Polar Bears finished fifth with 123. On the girls side, Margaretta's Tenlee Hammer took 13th in a time of 21:32. Amyra Ruffing was 29th in 23:16 for Margaretta. The Polar Bears were sixth as a team with 172 points. Liberty Center won the team championship with 26. TENNIS Port Clinton wins Fremont doubles invite FREMONT — Port Clinton's girls tennis team won every match it played en route to taking the Fremont Michaels Memorial Doubles Invitational championship. The Redskins took the max first place points with 120 while Fremont Ross was second at 68 points. Perkins with fourth with 48 and Sandusky tied for seventh with eight. Grace Arnold and Nora Pixler took the 1st Doubles championship, defeating opponents from Oak Harbor (10-0) and Napoleon (10-1) before topping Fremont Ross (10-3) in the final. Megan Zgodzinski and Shantha Weit won the 2nd Doubles title, topping Perkins (10-3), Oak Harbor (10-0) and then Fremont Ross (10-0) for the championship. Lilly Hatt and Jaelynn Mazur were champions at 3rd Doubles, knocking off Tiffin Calvert (10-0), Perkins (10-3) and Fremont Ross (10-1) to win the title. Anastasia Hughes and Jayda Mullens finished the sweep at 4th Doubles, taking down Fremont Ross (10-0), Perkins (10-4) and Napoleon (10-1) to claim the championship. For Perkins, the teams of Anna Ferback and Lexi Green, Emma Beatty and Katelynn Troyer, and Ella West and Paige Loris all won two out of their three matches. Roth wins at Ottawa Hills OTTAWA HILLS — St. Mary Central Catholic's Rae Roth won three matches at 3rd Singles, taking home an individual title at the Ottawa Hills Invitational. The Panthers finished third as a team with 19 points. Ottawa Hills A took the team championship with 28. Roth defeated opponents from Toledo Central Catholic (10-7), Ottawa Hills B (10-1) and Ottawa Hills A (10-5). Roth is now 9-0 at third singles this season. Lauren Maxwell and Bella Matthews were runners-up at 1st Doubles. After a first round bye, they defeated Central Catholic 10-9 (4). In the finals, they lost to Ottawa Hills A 10-0. Caitlyn Collins was third at 2nd Singles. She took a first round bye before losing to Ottawa Hills A (10-0). She bounced back to defeat Clay (8-4). VOLLEYBALL Perkins goes 2-0 PERKINS TWP. — The Pirates defeated Edison 17-25, 25-16, 25-22 and Ontario 25-15, 25-21, improving to 7-5 overall this season. Against the Chargers, Ferrell Coleman had 13 kills while Micah Slay lined 12 kills. Braelyn Davie (three aces) recorded 25 assists and Avery Maldonado (two aces) added 20 digs. In the win over Ontario, Davie ran the offense to the tune of 17 assists while Maldonado recorded 14 digs. Slay smacked eight kills for the Pirates. Edison also lost to Ontario, 27-25, 25-22. Ella Booth had 15 kills and seven blocks in the Chargers' two matches. Dana Preston added 14 kills, Paige McFadden had 24 assists and Taylor Moore finished with 23 digs. Monroeville 3, Buckeye Central 1 NEW WASHINGTON — Madi Reiber (two aces) tallied 13 kills to lead the Eagles to a 25-17, 25-11, 23-25, 25-22 non-league win. Ady Adams added 10 kills and four aces for Monroeville (10-2) while Alexa Adams contributed eight kills and three aces. Addison Homan recorded 45 digs, Addison Lyons (two aces) had 15 assists and 14 digs, Kaci Poths added 17 assists and Maddy Miller (two aces) had 14 digs. Firelands 3, Vermilion 1 OBERLIN — The Sailors won the first set, but Firelands responded for a 25-27, 25-20, 25-13, 25-14 non-league victory. Sophie Habermehl paced Vermilion (3-9) with seven kills while Emma Gebhardt, Elizabeth Okasinski (15 digs) and Lauren Logsdon (seven assists) each lined six kills. Haley Stepp had 20 digs, Habermehl contributed 13 digs and Elyse Myntti tallied 12 assists for the Sailors. Hopewell-Loudon 3, Margaretta 2 BASCOM — The Chieftains topped Margaretta 25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 16-14 in non-league action. Kenadie Saylor had 11 kills for the Polar Bears (5-7). Tarah Hershey finished with 39 assists, 28 digs and four aces. Renna Keller and Lilly Belak each had nine kills and Ella Limberios had 22 digs for Margaretta. Sandusky 1-2 in MBK Tournament SANDUSKY — Sandusky went 1-2 in its MBK Tournament. The Blue Streaks lost 25-13, 25-10 to Western Reserve, defeated Toledo Start 25-12, 22-25, 25-16 and lost to Marion Harding, 25-10, 20-25, 25-21. Sandusky's Maekhiya Rameau totaled 15 kills on the day. Zaira Nava finished with 12 aces. BOYS SOCCER Edison 9, Upper Sandusky 0 MILAN TWP. — Alex Davidson pumped in four goals as the Chargers reached the best start in school history with a non-league win. Edison is 8-0 and has already set a record for goals in a season with 81. Davidson has scored 31 goals and dished 11 assists this year. Carter Jones added three goals for the Chargers while Jose Serna Amaya had two assists and a goal. Trey Hines also scored for Edison. Port Clinton 4, Crestview 3 ASHLAND — Adam Fitt scored two goals as the Redskins topped Crestview in non-league play. Casey Brand also scored and recorded two assists for Port Clinton (4-3-1) while Wyatt Brand scored. Caden Hanson tallied 13 saves in goal for the Redskins. GIRLS SOCCER Port Clinton 2, Crestview 0 ASHLAND — Joey Crannick and Summer Lopresto each scored to lead the Redskins to a non-league win. Lopresto assisted on Crannick's goal while Isabella Adkins assisted Lopresto's goal. Abigail Johnson had 13 saves for Port Clinton (4-3). Norwalk 3, Ashland 3 ASHLAND — The Truckers and Arrows played to a non-league tie. Claire Spettle scored twice for Norwalk (5-2-1) and assisted Xavi Immel on the other goal. Becca Farmer had 10 saves for the Truckers. Clyde 1, Marion Harding 1 MARION — Clyde's Mallory Meggitt scored Clyde's goal in a tie with Marion Harding. Macey Carter made eight saves in goal for the Fliers (2-4-1). BOYS GOLF Bellevue wins Norwalk Invite NORWALK — Sam Cooper fired a 1-over 72, leading the Redmen to the team championship at the Norwalk Invitational at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Bellevue finished with a team total of 302, four shots better than Marysville's 306. Perkins (308) was third, Huron (350) was 11th, Clyde (353) was 12th, Norwalk (364) was 14th and Edison (366) was 15th. Jackson Decker added a 75 for the Redmen while Blake Sutherland (76) and Caden Lindsay (79) rounded out the team scoring. Amherst Steele's Jordan Miller was medalist with a 71. Kyle Schaefer carded a 72 for Perkins, equaling Cooper's mark. Zach Cummings finished with a 77 and Ty Obergefell shot a 78 for the Pirates. Grant Humphrey led Huron with a 75 while Nico Carroll carded a 78 for Clyde. Cohen Shoop's 84 topped Norwalk. Hayden Lewis was best for Edison with an 83.
