City targets repeat nuisance offenders

SANDUSKY — Sandusky officials are taking a harder stance to address nuisance issues based on a change in local law. During a recent public meeting, city commissioners approved the amendment as it largely applies to repeat offenders. Sandusky city manager John Orzech summarized the actions and its potential impact: • The present-day situation: "Today a property that keeps causing problems has to be given the full five-day notice every single time even if it was just abated recently. That means the same issue can drag on repeatedly, frustrating neighbors." • The change: "This change shortens the city's response from five days to one day when it's a repeat nuisance. The change would allow the city to act within 24 hours if that same property has already been cited and abated within the past year. In other words, repeat offenders would no longer automatically get a full five days to respond each time." • The violations: "These include things, like trash or debris left in yards; unsafe or unsecured structures; and other conditions that threaten the health, safety or welfare of neighbors." • The public benefit: "It lets us address problem properties more quickly, especially those that impact entire neighborhoods. Faster abatement means cleaner, safer streets and less disruption for residents living next to repeat offenders." • The complaint process: "Residents can contact the division of code compliance directly by phone, at 419-627-5913, or through the city's website, at cityofsandusky.com/report. Complaints can also be submitted in person at City Hall." • The guarantees: "Code compliance is critical to the overall appearance, safety and health of our community. The city has been focused on these issues in the community since the bicentennial vision strategic plan and the adoption this year of our strategic plan. We are committed to ensuring that all properties are in compliance with our codes and that the integrity of neighborhoods for quality of life issues, such as these, are addressed."
