Huron sweeps Edison to stay perfect in Bay

HURON — Huron's hitters took turns peppering Edison's defense in a three-set sweep Thursday. The Tigers stayed undefeated in the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-10 win that took a little more than a hour. "I'm pleased with what the girls did," Huron coach Don Wood said. "A lot of what we've been talking about got done tonight — offensively and defensively." Huron improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the Bay while Edison dropped to 4-6, 2-1. Sophomores Jada Foster (10 kills) and Mya Smith (9 kills) did the most damage for the Tigers. But seniors Ava Trevino (7) and Addison Graham (6) and junior Paige Johnson (5) also provided timely slams. "They did a nice job hitting under control," Wood said. "They took good, solid swings when they were available. I was happy with how they performed. They limited the errors." Edison jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set on a Kourtney Balde block before Huron quickly turned around the match. Foster's fourth kill of the first set gave Huron a 22-19 lead before Smith gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with her fourth kill. "We started handling the ball a little better and got a little offense going," Wood said. "If you're not running a strong attack at them, they're digging it. We had some great swings in the first 10 points that they popped up. "Jada had a couple really good swings and their libero (Taylor Moore) popped them up like nothing. They were playing great defense." In the second set, Graham had four early kills to give Huron an 8-2 lead. Kills by Jenna Cox and Trevino gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the match. An early 6-0 surge in the third set gave Huron a 14-5 lead. Trevino and Foster had huge kills in the run. "It feels amazing; it feels refreshing. It's indescribable, basically," Trevino said of her loudest kills. "We have a lot of good hitters. We're all very much like family and work together. There's no drama on the court. It's definitely unity." Trevino had three kills in the 6-0 run. "It's nice to see Ava get going," Wood said. "She's really worked hard on getting her control back. She's taking a shorter swing and she's been real effective with it." Four of Huron's last nine points were on aces — two from Cox and two from Avery Bork, who is part of a talented sophomore class. Huron had two 4-0 runs to go with its early 6-0 run in the third set. "We came out with good energy and got that lead early (in the first set)," Edison coach Sean Hoover said. "You've gotta be able to side out and we're not capable of siding out consistently right now. If you let teams go on little 2-, 3-, 4-point runs over and over again it's hard to make a comeback. "We gotta get back in the gym and work on why other teams side out quicker than we do." Moore led the Chargers with 21 digs and Paige McFadden had 11 assists. Reece Hotz had 39 assists and 10 digs for Huron. Adelyn Van Sickle added 13 digs and Graham finished with 10. Cox had four aces and Maggie Orzech served up three while Rylie Dehn was 12 for 12 serving. Huron is off for an entire week before hosting Margaretta next Thursday. The Tigers, the only undefeated team in the Bay, will visit Edison on October 2. "Doesn't matter what records are, it's always gonna be a battle," Wood said. "I can assure you when we go over there it's gonna be a tight match. It may have gotten away at times tonight, but that's not typical of Huron-Edison."
