Program transforms lives of locals

Editor's note: The following program is only available to those currently on housing choice voucher/Section 8 or public housing. SANDUSKY — The Family Self-Sufficiency Program, offered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development by the Erie Metropolitan Housing Authority, is making a real difference for families in Erie County, helping some move from economic hardship to stability. In a community where some are facing challenges, like poverty and limited job opportunities, this program provides a clear path for low-income families to achieve financial independence and build brighter futures. The program supports participants — typically public housing residents or Section 8 housing choice voucher holders — by pairing them with coordinators who help create personalized plans focused on education, job training, employment and financial literacy. A standout feature is the escrow savings account, in which a portion of rent increases — tied to higher earnings — is saved for the participant. After completing the program, which usually takes five years, families can use these savings for major goals, like homeownership, education or starting a business. In Erie County, this financial boost is helping participating families break free from poverty, creating stronger, more vibrant communities. Local success stories highlight the program's impact: • One graduate, starting with an annual income of about $8,900, boosted those yearly earnings to $37,000 and graduated with $3,300 in escrow, which was used for vehicle repairs to maintain reliable transportation. • Another participant saw yearly income rise from $2,000 to $21,800, graduating with $8,500 in escrow and using $6,200 for car-related expenses to support a job commute. • A third graduate, who began with no income, achieved a remarkable $47,800 annually, earned a diploma, secured employment and graduated with $44,200 in escrow, which will be used toward buying a home. For participating Erie County residents, this program tackles local challenges some may face, such as limited job prospects in industries like manufacturing and tourism. Through career counseling and skill-building, participants gain access to better-paying jobs, improving household stability and boosting the local economy. The program also fosters community pride, as families achieve milestones, including homeownership and strengthening neighborhood ties. The program's holistic approach, combining financial incentives with tailored support, makes it vital for breaking cycles of poverty.
